Washington Capitals rookie center Nicklas Backstrom was having a very good season. He's got 47 assists and 58 total points. Sunday he gave Sidney Crosby a huge assist by slapping one past Cristobal Huet. One problem, Huet also plays for the Caps.

The Pens Blog has a rather hilarious recap of the game. Like Pens fans, I was extremely amused by Huet and Ovechkin's reaction. Not that you can blame them, of course, but sliding into the fetal position may have been a bit much. Cheap-shotting Backstrom in the groin would have been much more acceptable.

Best of all, at the end of this video you can hear Sidney Crosby laugh through a "He shot that into his own net!"

You know, the more I watch this replay the more it looks like Backstrom momentarily forgot which end of the ice he was on. That was far to accurate a shot on goal.

I understand it was an instinctive reaction, but Ovechkin needs to reacts better than that. I'm not sure if Ovechkin is considered a leader on the team, but if he wants to be, he can't be doing that. A rookie makes a terrible mistake...you've got to let him know it's OK.

 

Kind of reminds me of Moises Alou throwing his tantrum after the Bartman play. Not exactly the same, but the team melted down after that. Had he just slapped his mitt and yelled that they'll get it next time, who knows how it would have turned out?

Ovenchkin is pissed that he did not get the credit for the goal. It can't be because he upset by the Pens scoring, since playing defense goes against everything he stands for.
