It's unfortunate when programs have an identity crisis and fail to acknowledge the realistic expectations of their place in the college football landscape. No one should merely settle for 8-4 records and consistent bowl games and always reach for the sky, but you should also realize what Houston Nutt has accomplished at Arkansas is impressive. You don't need to look much further than Minnesota to see what happens when a team thinks the grass is greener on the other side.
Nutt was such a bad coach he was hired 6 hours after resigning, by SEC rival Ole Miss.
I agree Arkansas didn't have much of a choice in pressuring Nutt into his departure, the fans and boosters seemed hellbent on busting him (thank you, Chris Fowler). That's where we're at now for many programs; the boosters have all the control and in many situations they know very little about football.
We'll see where Arkansas goes -- I presume Butch Davis will be contacted who has an out-clause fro the Razorbacks, Art Briles will be there, maybe even Chris Peterson. All of them are good coaches, perceived to be better than the oddball that is Houston Nutt, but we'll see if they can match his win total over the last two seasons. Doubtful.
