Projecting Kosuke Fukudome As A Chicago Cub
READ MORE:

While we await the likely to disappoint Mitchell Report, let's ponder the other big news in the MLB today. Kosuke Fukudome is coming to America, and has agreed to a 4-year, $48-million deal with the Chicago Cubs.

First of all, we'll have to clear up the appropriate pronunciation which will likely go unresearched by the drunken bleacher creatures at Wrigley Field (of which I may or may not be a part). Home Run Derby clears it up for us: Foo-Koo-Doh-May not Fuk-U-Do-Me (giggle).

How will the 30 year-old, coming off elbow surgery project into the Chicago Cubs lineup? Baseball Prospectus already has the numbers. I'm skeptical he's worth the $48-mil but a .401 on base percentage would please everyone.

How do you project Fukudome (if you care, that is)? BP says JD Drew (oh, dear), I was thinking a little more along the lines of Raul Ibanez.

O's got Patton and Constanzo, two young players who have a pretty good upside, along with Scott, Albers and Sarfate.  Tejada missed 29 games last season, but still only hit 18 HR and 81 RBIs.  I gotta believe his best years are behind him at this point.

I just hope the O's hold on to Bedard and Roberts, both who have been in trade rumors this offseason.

The 5 for 1 trade favors Baltimore. Now if it had been a 5 for 2 trade, say Tejada plus his supply of B-12 syringes, then the trade favors Houston.

The first thing that popped in my head is "Great!  Another veteran (he's played 9 years of pro ball, I believe) that is going to be considered for the rookie of the year award next season".

But that's a topic for another thread.

I don't know enough about Futurama to have an opinion of him yet.  And I probably won't get one until I see him take some swings in spring training.  But since he is coming from Japan, which means that typically he should be very fundamentally sound, I'm gonna say he does pretty well.  Especially at Wrigley.  Then again, Wrigley could be a huge culture shock for him.  Only time will tell.

Amen on the 9 year veteran up for rookie of the year thing.

I don't know too much about him, but based on what I have read and seen, I would think he'd be a solid major league player. It'll also probably be good for the Cubs in terms of bringing in additional advertising $ from Japan.

The Astros have apparently traded nothing for Miguel Tejada.  Also, the Pirates have decided trading their last good outfielder to the Padres wasn't enough and now might trade Jason Bay to them.  Ironically, they recieved Jason Bay for trading Brian Giles.

There's no way my 3rd grade humor will stray away from calling the guy Fuk-U-Do-Me more than once next year. But really, never watching the guy play, I can only go by highlights and what I read so far. We'll see how Spring goes.

It's too bad that Harry Caray is no longer with us.  Listening to him try to pronounce Fukodome would be entertaining.
