Rachel Alexandra Wins The 2009 Preakness Stakes. Mine That Bird Comes In Second.

Rachel Alexandra Lives Up To The Hype

Oftentimes, racehorses never live up to the hype surrounding them. And other times, they actually do.

Today, Rachel Alexandra, the heavily favored filly, lived up to the hype, and basically lead the whole race from start to finish.

I found it interesting this week that there was some question about whether or not Rachel Alexandra should race since she's a filly. Personally, I thought even the discussion of that was stupid. I mean, if there were a woman who was talented enough to play in the NBA or MLB or NFL, I wouldn't have any problem with that. I want to see the best damn athletes in the world competing, period.

The thing is that in most pro sports, men simply happen to be the best athletes, but in horse racing, the field is more equal. There are fillies out there, like Rachel Alexandra, who really are awesome horses. Let 'em race!

I should also point out that Mine That Bird impressed as well. The Derby winner, who some thought was a fluke winner, gave a late charge to almost overtake Rachel Alexandra. Mine That Bird proved how legit he was today, and had this race been the Belmont, he probably would have won it.

Of course, that's the next big question. Will we see Mine That Bird and Rachel Alexandra square off again at Belmont? Gotta say, after Rachel Alexandra's performance today, where she died a bit on the stretch run, that I wouldn't like her odds at Belmont. Mine That Bird though, he had a late burst today, which you wonder if he could repeat at Belmont.

Either way, we'll see in three weeks.

Mine that Bird had to go wide at the top of the stretch, and the jockey even had to steady, slowing Bird's momentum. Had those two things not happened, Bird would have beaten the filly. Bird should like the longer distance in the Belmont, and that's where my money will be going.

I also thought when MTB had to hold up just a bit for the pack to break up in front of him that that was the slight hesitation that kept him from catching RA down the stretch. But it was definitely a great race and I can't wait to see these horses square off in the Belmont.

You do understand that although she is definitely PHat, that she is really a filly. She is definitely not from the city of brotherly love.

She is one of the phinest phillies that my phingers have ever philled a phanIQ comment with.

That's the problem with having good friends from Philly. I'm conditioned to type that whenever I hear the term filly. Didn't even think twice about it. Damn you, Philly friends!

Two Triple Crown races, and two fantastic shows. The Belmont should be special from the gate.

I just like watching the jockey go flying off of Big Drama in the first 30 seconds..
