Redskins Quarterbacks Prepare For Season By Playing Dodgeball And Having Stuff Thrown At Them

Redskins Coach Jim Zorn Is Probably In For A Long, Long Season
by 100%InjuryRate

There were a fair number of people who questioned Jim Zorn being named the Redskins head coach. He was originally brought in to be the offensive coordinator in early 2008, then weeks later, after Joe Gibbs retired, he was quickly promoted to head coach by Dan Snyder. Zorn doesn't exactly have the most impressive resume, since the highest rank he's ever had in the NFL is QB coach - aside from those few weeks he was an OC in the offseason.

And Zorn isn't helping shake his image as a complete neophyte with his bizarre QB drills in training camp. Below is a non-doctored photo of Colt Brennan and Jason Campbell playing, uh, dodgeball. Except with a massively oversized training ball (courtesy of Mr. Irrelevant).

What purpose this drill serves, I have literally no clue. An attempt to blow out Brennan's arm is my best guess. Or perhaps Zorn watched too many episodes of The Prisoner on TV when he was younger and wants his players to know how to avoid dangerous orbs (go to 1:48 of the video to understand what the hell I'm talking about).

If you think the dodgeball is weird, then you'll love this other drill Zorn is subjecting his QBs to. Having them go back to pass while getting pads thrown in their face.

Clearly Zorn wants to make sure that if a full scale riot breaks out during a football game, his QBs will be fully prepared to lead the team down the field to victory.

Seriously buddy, I have no clue what the hell you're hoping to achieve with these drills, but good luck this season. You'll clearly need it.

I've always thought the silliest drill was when a coach holding a pad tried to bump a quarterback. Throwing a pad or workout ball seems no different, and at least the other quarterbacks are doing something other than watching. Drills are drills.

At least Jim Zorn isn't having Campbell throw interceptions, just to get more accustomed to how it feels and having to tackle. I hear that's what they are doing at Bears camp.

If I had to guess, I would say that he's taking his training camp ideas straight out of Madden 2008 Mini-camp mode. I mean, if it's in the game, it's in the game.

He was a QB (On Tecmo Super Bowl no less), and a QB coach, so in theory he should know what he's doing with QB's.  But....umm...

It is going to be a more than interesting year for the 'Skins - but hey, we made it through Jack Pardee, Steve Spurrier, Norv Turner, we can make it through Jim Zorn... who knows - maybe he is just crazy enough to actually work!

I'll be honest... I don't see anything terribly odd about these drills other than they were caught on camera. Since QB's can't get hit during early stages of practice, coaches try a lot of maneuvers to at least force them to dodge contact (training ball or not). Nothing to see here, please move on.

See the key word you use is "dodge."

In that second drill, I don't see anyone dodging anything. All I see is a dude getting peppered with thrown pads. And that serves what purpose? So when the rioting Redskins fans start hucking stuff on the field during a crappy season the QB can still get the pass off. That's my best guess.

The time to joke or laugh about these drills is later on in the season.  I'm not a coach and I doubt that any of you were called for interviews. If he falls flat then get on his case.

Normally I'd agree, but not this time. I don't think the Redskins can hang in this division. And unless Zorn has some magic up his sleeves - who knows, he might - then I don't see his coaching term lasting too long. I mean, Snyder appointed him to head coach pretty much on a whim. He's just as likely too be fired on a whim as well.

By the way, why is everyone so worked up over dodgeball? Let's all just be honest with ourselves here. These are stupid drills.

Zorn was an NFL QB and a QB coach. I assume he knows a little bit about the business, so I will give him the benefit of the doubt. It is certainly no sillier than the tip drill. I mean, really? What is learned from having to catch a ball tipped straight up into the air when you know it is going to be tipped straight up into the air???

The tip drill does make some sense. Although you know it will be tipped, you don't know where it'll be going necessarily.

Plus, you have to help the confidence of some of those defensive players who have bricks for hands.

Hopefully 'the Daniel' won't make the training camp jersey's a 3rd jersey for the regular season. We'll go blind. That would be another idiotic move by him

Look we all should have seen this coming when the Zorn hired Patches O'Houlihan as QB coach.
