I didn't watch the LSU/South Carolina game last night, but I did hear about a ref who more or less tackled South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia during the game. I didn't think it was possible that something like could happen, but, well, I was wrong.
Above is a sideline video of the incident that provides the best angle, and yes, the ref pretty much becomes another linebacker. He actually follows Garcia laterally, then moves towards Garcia and delivers a hit with his shoulder. I'd love to know what in the hell was going through the ref's head. He must have had a flashback to his playing days or something. Either that or he definitely didn't have money on South Carolina.
Nothing happened as a result of this, like the ref getting suspended or anything, but I guess if any college teams are looking for an extra linebacker, try and get this guy reffing your game on Saturday.
It wasn't intentional but that doesn't mean it wasn't completely uncalled for and the guy should be severely reprimanded. The officials are taught to pay attention to the play and get the hell out of the way. You can tell the poor guy was scared to death and did what anyone not wearing pads would do if they saw Garcia rushing at them. I don't know what this guy was daydreaming about all night, but he was in the way a couple times that game. That play was the only time that he was physical about it. The fact that everyone is pretending it was ok is ridiculous. Then again, I shouldn't be suprised with the way the officials have been calling a lot of these games....dead play when the QB is still running, holding calls on players that weren't within reach of anyone else...they need to take a long hard look at their officials and need to clean house quick. Just don't go with the NFL refs, they are even worse this year.
