Sammy the Owl, the Rice mascot, got ejected during Wednesday's game against Tulane for headbutting an official. Fast forward to the 1:40 mark to see the headbutt. Apparently Sammy took issue with the officiating, because he protested enough to get tossed by referee Curtis Shaw.
This is the first time I've seen a mascot ejected from a college hoops game. Then again, it's also the first time I've seen a mascot headbutt a referee. Anyone have any idea what that was all about? Better yet, after the game, Rice coach Ben Braun took offense to the way Tulane coach Dave Dickerson was going through the post-game congratulatory handshake line. No idea what HIS problem was there.
