Cheap Shot Rob Or A Great Veteran Playoff Play?
by CriticalFanatic
5/16/08

In football it's common practice to go after a key player's injury. A running back has a bum right ankle, you make sure to wrap him and give an extra twist around the feet. If a QB has a bad shoulder, a 15-yard accidental late hit might be worth it.

It might not be applauded, but I find it acceptable in a physical, contact sport. I don't see it that way with what the Spurs tried to pull off last night.

Send in Big Shot Bob to get in a cheap shot
on David West's back a game after he torched San Antonio for 38 points and has proved to be the difference maker in these playoffs. Chris Paul is great, but West's presence is key to beating the Spurs.

Mark Jackson applauded this play as something that former NBA greats would stand up and applaud - a savvy veteran move. Really? I don't see it that way.

Byron Scott is one of those former NBA guys Jackson was speaking of:
“I’m not real OK with it,” Scott told Yahoo! Sports. “But if I didn’t know Robert on a personal level, I’d say that was a dirty shot. Yeah, if I didn’t know him the way I know him, I’d say it was a cheap shot.”

“I also think he understood what he was doing."

Worst of all, Spurs fans chanted Horry's name for the subsequent minute. Classy.

Typical Spurs garbage, but it's the kind of garbage that makes the NBA much more entertaining when you have the good guys battling evil wearing black.

Let's just hope West is good to play in Game 7. If that's the case, I can forget about this cheap shot.

Horry leaves mark on West, Hornets [!]

Are you serious???

One more reason I don't watch basketball anymore!  He stepped in the way of a guy with the ball ... with his hands down.  Yes, intentionally.  Yes, to foul the guy.  To hurt him?  Pure speculation ... at best.  It wasn't "dirty" or anything even bordering "flagrant" or I'd be more upset with the ref for no ejection.

His back was hurting, he took a risk at playing, he got a little banged up.  Wah.

It's not a "classy" play, it's not a "skillful" play, it's not a "rookie" play, nor is it a "veteran" play.  It's a Common one ... on all levels.

Nobody plays like that at all.  He wasn't intending to set a screen for anybody, all it was intended for was to injure David West.  If that isn't cheap then I don't know what is.

If he had actually been looking at the ball and not David West's back, then maybe. But the fact the he waited until West to jump before putting the forearm in his back is what makes it a "cheaper" play.

No, what's "cheap" is Artest hopping into a crowd to pick a fight with a guy in the stands.  That was "cheap" because we as fans watch to see a game be played.  We can go outside and see anyone pick a fight over nothing.

Horry played the game.  The move he made isn't classified in any rule books as being illegal, because he did it by the book.  Was done intentionally to hurt the other guy?  Who cares??!!  Seriously?  He obeyed the rules, which is what we expect.  If he was trying to hurt the guy ... let him deal with the guilt.

If we, as a huge fan base, blast him over this (as is being done by the media), do you honestly think he'll ever feel guilty over it?  No!  Because he'll

He was called for an offensive foul in the rule book, so that means he did something illegal.
