Well, that was fast.

Anyone who thought Roger Federer was getting old needs to be taken out to the woodshed. Because that's exactly what Federer did this evening to 21-year-old Andy Murray.

Federer dominated this match-up, winning 6-2, 7-5, 6-2, and claimed his fifth straight US Open. Federer broke Murray a ridiculous 7 times in the match. You rarely see that in a Grand Slam final. That's more along the lines of something you see in a first round beat down.

This means Federer now has 13 Grand Slam titles, putting him one away from tying Pete Sampras. Oddly, between the 27 combined titles that Federer and Sampras own, there isn't a single French Open title.

Interestingly, I think Federer's US Open title actually makes me reassess Nadal's stature as the current #1 player in the world. Nadal simply can't win a Grand Slam title on hardcourt. He's at least been able to expand his game from clay to grass, but not yet hardcourt. And just going by how Federer played today, I don't think Nadal would have done much of anything even if he'd made the final.

Federer is still going to ultimately tie and pass Sampras. He'll probably never win the French, but since Nadal still has more work to do on hardcourt, Federer should be able to win a few more US and Australian Opens before he hangs his racket up.
