Ryan Church probably never thought he'd have a lot in common with Trent Green, but after his second concussion of the season already - this is baseball, mind you - he and Trent have likely been seeing a lot of the same birds.
You've likely seen the video by now, but check out this nasty collision at second base in Atlanta last night. Yunel Escobar's knee catches Church clean to the head, knocking the Mets right fielder cold and right down into the dirt. Not that a mild concussion is minor by any means, but it looked a whole lot worse in real time. Church should be OK, except for that whole having had two concussions in three months situation.
While Church took a shot to the head, his team took two on the chin, losing a doubleheader to Atlanta and placing Willie Randolph back on the ever-changing hot seat. Braves 6, Mets 2; Braves 6, Mets 1.
Briefly around the rest of the league ... Mastering the Royals, Again Hell of a time for the Red Sox prized pitching prospect Justin Masterson to be called up. Just go out a follow up a no-hitter by a fellow young arm. Sure, no problem coach. Well, he pitched just fine: 6.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 5 K, 3 BB. Red Sox 2, Royals 1.
Sad, Sad Yankees Alex Rodriguez returned, which is great and all, but by his first at-bat the pinstripes were down 9-0. A-Rod did hit a meaningless home run later in the game but the big highlight was Derek Jeter getting plunked hard in the wrist and LaTroy Hawkins doing his dirty work, throwing high at Luke Scott's head. Fortunately, if there's one guy aiming at your grill, it might as well be LaTroy. He's going to miss his spot. Orioles 12, Yankees 2.
Leyland Wants All Tigers Off His Lawn After his f-bomb escapade earlier the day, Detroit decided to show up on the field ... for 8 1/2 innings. Just to keep things interesting, the Tigers bullpen gave up four runs in the top of the 9th. Tigers 12, Mariners 8.
Why do I have a feeling that Mr. Church was asking someone to answer the phone for a couple of hours after this.
I do not know what was more of a feat last night in Chicago: 1) The White Beat Sabathia for just the 4th time in about a thousand starts (unofficially) 2) The Sox win their 6th in a row 3) Carlos Quentin leads the AL in HR's????
Crazy bastards, I know they are just messing with my head, but it is great to see them playing well.
