Ryan Clark Hit On Wes Welker
Ryan Clark Nearly Kills Wes Welker, Should Probably Expect A Fine
The Patriots spent their Sunday getting thoroughly beat down at home by the Steelers who pretty much had a field day in terms of abusing Matt Cassel. But as bad a day as Cassel had, at least he didn't wind up like Wes Welker.

Welker got de-cleated by Ryan Clark in what can only be described as a ridiculously cheap hit.

Welker, who obviously had no idea where the hell he was after that hit, didn't return to the game after staggering to the sidelines.

Technically speaking, on a tipped ball, players are allowed to pretty much do whatever they want. But when you destroy a guy when the ball isn't anywhere close to him, and there was clearly time for you to pull up before hitting him, you can expect a hefty fine coming your way.

It also won't help Clark that he was fined for doing the exact same thing to Matt Jones of the Jags earlier this season.

Maybe Clark can avoid a fine if he just lets Welker slam him in the head with a two-by-four.

Keep your head on a swivel...... It was a clean hit no helmet to helmet. watch the clock not even a second passes after the ball was tipped to the hit. Its football not golf.

Thats just nasty.  I hate the Pats about as much as anyone, but can't defend that hit.

That was the dumbest play of that game.  Clark should certainly expect a fine, because that was totally uncalled for.  The ball was already tipped, but apparently Clark thought he had a free shot at Welker.  I give Clark the award for a$$hole of the day.

It was a cheap shot.  And intentional.  A dirty play designed to injure the opponent.

How would that be any different if he were a defensive lineman targeting the QB's knees.

I wonder if Welker will miss games due to a concussion.

The game is violent enough without adding intent to it.  The NFL should fine any player who hits with the intent to injure another player.

its just the laws of physics, all that energy has to go somewhere  and were he to catch the ball, same hit, same complaints

I don't know, it looks like Welker was slowing down when he got hit.   The play was over, so he was letting up.  Cheap hit, we don't need another Stingley type of incident.

lol granted the speed difference i agree man it could have been worse...now aaron Rodgers got hit 2 feet outta bounda that was cheap but in play it doesnt even look like he knew he DIDNT have the ball until realization hit him after the hit, he even looks like he feels bad.... he didnt get up and celebrate

yeah if you watch it again his helmets pointing at the ground waiting for the hit since palamalu was right there if he missed, really dont think it was that intentional plus the ball was smacked so its hard to even line up timing....he knew he wasnt getting a pick but he was gonna hit somebody....

  • After the ball hit the ground
  • Welker wasn't even looking
  • Ball wasn't near him
  • Play was dead- everyone except Clark slowed down
  • Clark left his feet and went for the head of Welker
  • Hit with intent to injure

No I don't think it was a dirty hit

Clark is a tool.  Even his own team mates have issues with him in practice.  If  Welker catches the ball, it's a nasty hit, but come on.  All he did was see Welker coming across the middle and assumed he caught the ball.....and you know what happens when you assume.....although Clark is the only ass here.  He should have laid up.

As football fans seeing hard hits has always been a part of the game, but there has to be some restraint on the players part when possible. Welker had no chance at catching the ball and clark knew it. You could see him load up to hit him. I THINK WELKER IS A GUSTY RECIEVER  and most of his routes are over the middle and like any other reciever he expects hard hits, but legal ones and not cheap shots.Im a steelers fan and love the style of football they play, but i dont like cheap shots ........ no matter whos getting them

Your right Welker is a gutsy receiver, one of the best in the game. However there was nothing that was illegal about that hit. It was a good hard hit period.

One thing people don't realize, is that is a HUGE part of playing Defense, if you are constantly getting hit every time you come over the middle weather you catch it or not, you are going to stop catching ones you should. Intimidation plays a role even with the best players. A hit like that alone probably accounts for at least a couple dropped  passes and first downs a game. Now days with the parity in league that can mean the game.

the refs have rebuked the call completely, bottom line he didnt lead with the helmet, maybe a split second from when the ball got tipped AND he TURNS IF NO ONE NOTICES to avoid as much as possible...he did his job.......period....
