Saturday Night Hockey Open Game Thread 2/23

Nationally aired triple header plus nine games more equals huge lineup of hockey [NHL Live Thread]

2/23/13 in NHL   |   Jess   |   34903 respect

Greetings, puckheads, and welcome to a wonderful Saturday packed full of hockey on FanIQ! Today the games start at noon eastern time, which means 9:00am my time, which means I may not peek my head in and comment until just a tad later. But don't wait for me! There are 12 games on the slate today. Three of those games will be airing nationally on NHL Network; Devils @ Caps, Avs @ Kings, and Preds @ Wings. Every one of those games promises to be highly entertaining, so there will be a whole lot to share with each other. Debi may or may not be joining us. Bryan, let's get started...

Game: Devils (10-3-4) @ Capitals (5-10-1)
Bryan - I will not pick this game I will not pick this game I will not pick this game...HA, you thought I was gonna pick anyway!

Jess - Well, I'll pick this game! As much as I'd like to see the Capitals come out of whatever funk they're in right now, I don't think that's happening today. My money's on the Devils.

Debi -  Yawwwwn.  Well an 8 week old puppy means I have some time this morning to put my picks in after all!  I'm also really reluctant to pick this game, but I have to agree with Jess.  I really, really want the Caps to win, but I'm going to have to take the "Debils" in this one.
Game: Jets (7-8-1) @ Flyers (8-10-1)
Broadcast: TSN-JETS, CSN-PH
Bryan - Remember the game these two played in Philly last year that ended with the Jets winning 9-8? Yeah, I don't think that's gonna happen again. I have no confidence in either team to put a streak together and climb up in the standings. I'm actually gonna take the Jets in this one.

Jess - I do not remember that game. 9-8? Really? Were Carp and Goldberg in net that day? I would normally take the Jets too, but I think the Flyers take this win at home.

Debi - I have to be loyal to the Jets in this one, even though my dad is probably looking down on me saying "What are you thinking??"  Sorry, Dad.

Game: Coyotes (8-6-2) @ Oilers (6-7-3)
Broadcast: FS-A, SNET-W
Bryan - The road team from the desert takes this one. I still have zero confidence in Edmonton.

Jess - I dunno, BK - this is an awfully early game for a team that plays their home games on west coast time.  I think that ultimately the Yotes are the better team, but their last two games were at home and they've had a pretty lax schedule this past week. I predict they come out flat and stay that way for at least most of the game. It may not be enough to overcome the Oilers this time.

Debi - Oh Jess, yee of little faith!  I can't pick the Oilers.  Nope, can't do it, even though my two nephews are at this game today (IF they survived last night and are actually awake).  But even though they have their jerseys on and should be cheering drunkenly, I'm still picking the 'Yotes.  BTW these are the two nephews I spoke of in our nostalgia hockey memories thread.  Little buggers.

Game: Avalanche (7-7-1) @ Kings (7-6-2)
Broadcast: NHLN-US, ALT, FS-W
Bryan - Kings are over .500 now, and the Avs are putrid on the road. I'm going with the champs in this one.

Jess - This will be a nail-biter, I'm sure. I agree though, Kings win.

Debi - Yeah, this is the game I really wish I got on TV.  I think the Kings are surging again, and although I think the Avs aren't exactly awful, I think the Kings will prevail.

Game: Islanders (7-9-1) @ Sabres (6-11-1)
Broadcast: MSG PLUS, MSG-B
Bryan - Quoth the Eric, "WOOF!"

Jess - Hah! Right? Well...I'll pick it. I still don't think the Sabres are in their right mind right now. Islanders get the W.

Debi - Agree.  Islanders it is.

Game: Rangers (8-6-2) @ Canadiens (11-4-2)
Broadcast: CBC, RDS, MSG
Bryan - One of the league's worst power plays against one of the league's best...Lundqvist will keep the Rangers in this game and give them a chance to win, but their lack of scoring will hurt them dearly tonight. This will be a fun game to watch and may very well come down to the wire or possibly OT, but the Habs will find a way to win on home ice.

Jess - Ugh the Rangers are killing my picks percentage. They have GOT to start shooting the puck! Florida's Markstrom faced 40 shots against your Penguins and only let 3 in. Thirty-seven saves and his Panthers still lost the game. Dear Rangers: You know why the Penguins got that win? Because they shot the puck! So frustrating. Anyway, I'm not giving up on them yet.

Debi - Rangers have chances and instead of shooting the's a pass.  Nothing I hate more than a team not taking advantage when one is there.  Habs for my son.

Game: Maple Leafs (11-7-0) @ Senators (10-6-2)
Broadcast: CBC
Bryan - I'm taking Toronto for this one tonight. Ottawa found a way to win in a lengthy shootout against the Rangers, but I think Anderson's injury may just be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

Jess - Hmm. Sens.

Debi - Not taking the Leafs, even though I think it might be the smart pick.  Sens (for no other reason than I like them better).

Game: Lightning (8-7-1) @ Hurricanes (8-6-1)
Broadcast: SUN, FS-CR
Bryan - This gets my pick for game of the night. Both of these teams are battling for the top spot in their division. I see this being very evenly matched. Stamkos will get a point, and one of the Staal brothers will score a goal. Maybe this will go to a 10-round shootout. Goaltending will be the difference tonight, and since the Canes have Cam Ward, the Canes will pull this one out at home.

Jess - Something is telling me to pick the Hurricanes here too.

Debi - Yeah, I don't know why either, but I have to go with the Hurricanes.

Game: Predators (8-5-5) @ Red Wings (7-7-3)
Broadcast: NHLN-US, FS-TN, FS-D+
Bryan - The Preds just got shut out last night on home ice 1-0. They're going to be mad about that, but they'll also be tired. The wings are still out of the playoff picture if the season ended today, still hard to believe! Somehow I see the Wings sticking around, and I'm picking the home team to win at The Joe.

Jess - If I'm Pekka Rinne, I'm calling out all sorts of guys right now. This offense is atrocious. He shouldn't be expected to get the shutout every game in order to win. I'm with you. Red Wings.

Debi - I'm really torn on this one, and the Wings have been my nemesis.  Every time I do pick them, they seem to lose.  So I want to pick them so they lose.  But I want the Preds to win.  Dammit.  Okay, Wings. (reverse psychology

Game: Blue Jackets (5-10-2) @ Blues (9-6-2)
Broadcast: FS-O, FS-MW
Bryan - St. Louis hasn't exactly set the world on fire on home ice, but Columbus is still el stinko. This one might be over quick. I'm taking the Blues to walk away with this one and win by at least 3 goals.

Jess - I'm calling an upset again for Columbus. Just because.

Debi -  HAt! Stupid game.  Yeah, I'll go with you Jess, cuz these bottom dwellers actually won the other night.

Game: Sharks (8-5-3) @ Stars (8-8-1)
Broadcast: CSN-CA, FS-SW
Bryan - The Sharks gave it all they had last night in Chicago, but they still couldn't do it. Now they're facing the stars who are still iffy to me, don't know what to make of them. They're Jekyll and Hyde again. I know Dallas will be the fresher team, but I'm taking the Sharks to pull out a road win.

Jess - Oh god, really? I have nothing against the Sharks, but evidently I'm supposed to root against them. Personally I'd rather see them beat Dallas. By default, since the Sharks aren't the Stars, even if they were 0-16-0 I have to pick the Sharks.

Debi - I know Jess won't pick the Stars.  I see Bryan has picked the Sharks.  We need a s**t disturber, so I'll pick the Stars, just for fun.

Game: Wild (8-6-2) @ Flames (5-7-3)
Broadcast: CBC, FS-N, FS-WI
Bryan - Debi, your Flames have been, for lack of a better explanation, horrific on home ice. However, the Wild haven't been much better on the road. Something's gotta give. I'm taking the home team and hoping that they find a way to win this one!

Jess - Wishful thinking maybe? Whatever it is, I'm picking the Flames

Debi - I don't know why the Flames suck so badly on home ice.  It's ridiculous.  However, without Clutterbuck in the lineup, the Wild don't have their big hitter.  For the Flames, well, simply put, they need Kipper back in net and that's still a week away.  Baerstchi back on ice might help a little (I hope) You know I gotta take the Flames.

What a great day of NHL action! Let's kick it off with my favorite - Saves of the Week for 2/22...

Amazing, right? And since I'm feeling generous today, we're going to get another one. Yep - bonus video! One of my very favorite things about sports in general is that they lend themselves to some unexpected hilarity at any given time. Hockey is especially awesome at this, as you can see:

Flames are ahead 2-1.  Something is going right, at least for the moment.

Eff Dallas.

Scott - I'm glad your Blues won, even if it messed up my pick %.

And ugh, Rangers. *sigh*

It wasn't pretty but the Blues get the much needed 2 points against the Blue Jackets.  Up next, a date on Thursday night against the Blackhawks.

Flyers have taken a 4-3 lead thanks to 3 unanswered PP goals.

2/23/13   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

A pair of PP goals ices it for the Caps, one being the HT for Ovechkin.  5-1 the final, Caps win.

Meanwhile it's 3-2 in Philly nearing the end of the 2nd period.

2/23/13   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

Hedberg gave it away behind his own net and Eric Fehr did NOT miss the wide open net, 3-1 Caps.  Jets have also taken the lead back 2-1 in Philly.

2/23/13   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

Early 3rd period goal gives the Caps the lead back.  Ovie 2, Devils 1.

2/23/13   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

Kovalchuk ties it for the Devils in the last minute, 1-1 after 2 periods in DC.  Also only 1-1 in Philly after a period.

2/23/13   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

Ovechkin scores and the Caps take a 1-0 lead.

2/23/13   |   kramer   |   11004 respect

It should've been 1-0 Caps going into the first intermission, but Wolski missed a wide open net behind Hedberg.  He had the tip in and shot the puck across the goal line and out the other side of the crease.
