I was secretly rooting for Florida to win the National Championship for one very specific reason. Senator Bill Nelson (D) of Florida and Senator Tom Coburn (R) made a bet that if their home state team won, the other guy would have to sing an embarrassing song in front of staffers and media. If Oklahoma had won, Nelson would have had to sing Oklahoma! How utterly unoriginal. However, Oklahoma did not win, and as a result Coburn had to sing........Rocket Man, by Elton John.
Now that is awesome. So why did Nelson choose Rocket Man as Coburn's penalty in the bet? Apparently it was in honor of Nelson's 1986 flight aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia. Hey, all I know is that any time you can get a senator to sing "I'm gonna be hiiiiiigh" it's good stuff.
Hilariously, Coburn's daughter is actually a renowned opera singer, which means she obviously got those pipes from Mom. And the only thing more hilarious than that is that Coburn is staunchly opposed to federal funding for the arts. Maybe having sung Rocket Man will change his tune.
And while I enjoyed Coburn's take on Rocket Man, nothing in this world will ever top William Shatner's version.
