I've got Irish roots, so I'm allowed to say what we all know is true. We Irish aren't the most athletic of people. So when one of us shows some kind (or any kind) of athletic prowess, we'll immediately do anything we possibly can to get that person on the grandest sports stage of all - the Olympics. That's primarily so we can show the world that we can do more than just drink a lot of beer.
Well, we've found a potential Olympic star in Premier League midfielder Rory Delap who plays for Stoke City. So what is Delap's skill? Dude can huck throw-ins an absurd 45 meters in the air. That's almost 50 yards. Naturally, we want him for the most spectacular and well-covered of Olympic sports - the javelin.
Crazy? Hell yes. But not quite so crazy after you watch some of his throw-ins.
One Olympic Council Of Ireland spokesman said, “Rory certainly has one hell of an arm on him”, which would be the understatement of the year.
Anyhow, Irish athletic officials hope to arrange a meeting between Delap and Ireland’s greatest ever javelin thrower, Terry McHugh, before hopefully getting him some training in time to have him compete at the 2012 Games.
Hey, whatever works. In fact, considering he's Irish, we'll be impressed provided he just doesn't come in last.
