NBA Triple Threat: Your daily roundup of last night's action in the Association.Atlanta 87 New Orleans 79 Someone break up the Hawks. Atlanta improved to 3-0 for the first time in 11 years with their three wins coming against the Magic, 76er's, and Hornets. The Hawks are doing it with strong defense. Coming into last night's game the Hawks were giving up a league leading 86.5 points per game and that number improved as they held the league leaders in scoring almost 30 points below their average. Joe Johnson had a game leading 24 points while Josh Smith scored 11, pulled down 11 rebounds, and had 3 blocks. Chris Paul had his 4th 20+ point, 10+ assist game of the season while showing his support for Obama on his sneakers. Other than Paul though, the Hornets struggled on the offensive end though David West had 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 blocks. The Hornets suffered their first loss of the season and the Hawks are proving that last season's playoff run was no fluke.
Detroit 100 Toronto 93 In another battle of unbeatens, the Pistons used 27 points from Tayshaun Prince and 22 from Rip Hamilton to slow down the monster combination of Chris Bosh and Jose Calderon and move to 4-0 for the first time since the 2005-06 season. Prince added 9 rebounds and 3 assists to his game high 27 points. The Pistons were without Allen Iverson because Chauncey Billups has yet to take his phyiscal so the trade is still not official. Word is Billups will take his physical Thursday and Iverson will be available for Friday's matchup against New Jersey. Rodney Stuckey got the start and had 14 points and 5 assists in 32 minutes. Chris Bosh continued his MVP like play with 26 points and 13 rebounds while Jose Calderon continued to show he will be the next great point guard with 24 points and 8 assists. The Raptors drop to 3-1 on this still very young season.
San Antonio 129 Minnesota 125 2OT In the wildest game of the night, the Spurs got their first win of the season with a thrilling double overtime victory over Minnesota. Tony Parker had a career game pouring in 55 points (career high), 10 assists, and 7 rebounds. In doing so Parker also became just the third player in NBA history, joining Michael Jordan and Oscar Robertson, as the only players to score 50+, dish 10+ assists, and have 5+ rebounds. Not to be outdone, Tim Duncan had a "quiet" 30 point, 16 rebound effort. Al Jefferson, 30 points and 14 rebounds, thought his baby hook over Duncan with 2.5 seconds in the 1st overtime would be the winner, but that was enough time for Parker to hit a 18 foot jump shot to send it into a 2nd overtime. Mike Miller also filled the stat sheet with 25 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists. So sadly the Spurs finally win a game but this was just one game against a bad team so we have to wait and see if they can carry this momentum into their next game against Miami.
Best Lines
- Amare Stoudemire: 49 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 steals, 2 blocks, and one embarrassing flop that I cover below.
- Tony Parker: 55 points (22-36 fg's, 9-10 ft's), 10 assists, and 7 rebounds
- LeBron James: 41 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals. 0-2 from three point land making him 0-13 on the season.
- Dwayne Wade: 29 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 steals, and 3 blocks
- Chris Paul: 22 points, 11 assists, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals. 4-4 in 20+ points, 10+ assists games this season.
- Luke Ridnour: 20 points, 11 assists, and 7 rebounds
- "Super Nintendo" Chalmers: 9 steals (team record), 6 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds in another stat stuffing night for the rookie.
Rumors and Random Notes
- Carmelo Anthony wanted to score 44 points tonight in honor of Barack Obama becoming our 44th president. Well Melo had a Franklin Pierce in the first half and ended with just a Woodrow Wilson. No He Couldn't!
- Antonio McDyess feels a little insulted by the Pistons for trading him, so after that 30 day wait period look for him to possibly sign with the Celtics. That would be a huge pickup for the Celtics, mostly because it would keep him away from Detroit but they could use the front court help as well.
Bonus Floptastic Video
Ok, with Manu Ginobili missing the first few months of the season so far, we have had a lack of serious flopping in the NBA this season and it has been great. Well last night I submit a bid for Amare Stoudemire to be inducted into the "FBS Hall of Fame". Amare will be joining Baron Davis in the "FBS Hall of Fame" after this display tonight against the Pacers where after throwing down a huge dunk Amare goes to head back down the court and then lets 6'1" 175lb muscle man Travis Diener launch him across the baseline. Diener was even given a technical for this. So congratulations to Amare Stoudemire for joining Baron Davis in the "FBS Hall of Fame"
Now its your turn, share your thoughts on tonight's NBA action.
