Sylvia Fowles Dunks During WNBA All Star Game
This, Ladies And Gentlemen, Is Why The WNBA Sucks
READ MORE:

The next time someone implies that a woman could ever play in the NBA, I will refer them to this video. It took a wide-open lane for Sylvia Fowles to throw down a dunk that high school kids all over the country are capable of doing in their sleep. Keep in mind that she did it with a ball that's smaller than regulation NBA basketballs, and she's 6'5". And it took her two tries.

I would venture to guess that there's not a single NBA player 6'5" or taller who can't dunk from a standstill. With both hands. With Sylvia Fowles playing defense. Yet, this is apparently a huge deal in the WNBA, and the announcers felt the need to go nuts about it.

So if you are ever wondering just how pathetic the WNBA is, just take a look at this clip, and realize that this is the very best that they have to offer. Enjoy.

Since when does dunking equal talent?

I think we are selling it short if we say the only reason it sucks is b/c they can't dunk....there are about 34 other reasons why it sucks along with that ;)

It is difficult to watch, but my buddies always remind me "if you have a daughter, you'll learn to appreciate it."  I'll take their word for it.

How about fundamental basketball? If you can't dunk, don't play?? Come on.

Let me just say this Candance Parker won the McDonalds High School Slam Dunk Contest...................she was the only female competitor. She  kicked the men/boys in the butt......

And Pat I bet you cannot dunk. Heyhey1970 when you have a daughter you learn to appreciate a lot of things men with one seem to never understand.

I like the WNBA..................but then I happen to like women, I have two daughters and raised one as a single parent. It gives a Dad a different perspective to raise a daughter on his own.

The only thing that nullified the importance, was the first missed dunk. If it had been made on the first try, or more impressively the second time, it would have been more exciting.

I hear what your saying on both comments and I have nothing wrong with anything said....except one thing.  That high school "contest" that Parker won was more shady than an Olympic pairs figure skating outcome.  I don't think anyone can watch that contest and honestly come away saying that Parker really was a superior dunker than any of the other competitors.

Instead of trying to hype those that can dunk in their league, the WNBA needs to do a better job pulling in the Women's NCAA Basketball fans who only follow their players up through the NCAA tourney.  You won't win new fans with contrived dunks at the end of an exhibition game.

I can't dunk now, but I could dunk a WNBA ball when I was a sophomore in high school. I've gained a few pounds since then. But I'm also 6 inches shorter than Sylvia Fowles.

And your claims that Candace Parker "kicked the men/boys in the butt" is false. She won by pity/novelty vote. Other than the fact that she had different anatomy than that of her competitors, there was nothing special about her dunks, and you know it.

And no, the dunk isn't the only thing that speaks to the mediocrity of the WNBA. It's just a stellar example of their relative lack of athleticism.

Or if someone was playing defense.

It was obvious that in this or any all-star game... defense is foreign. LOL

I like the WNBA also. I too have daughters( 3) and two played basketball, one exceptionally well.  If she was in the WNBA I would be hyping the WNBA even more than I do now. If the league folds, it folds. I can almost see it happening with the way they give up fan draws like Ivory Latta.

Who taught Sylvia how to dunk, Michael Jordan?

nothing wrong with that play.  everyone cant dunk right now ladies bodies aren/t there right now but in a few years who knows.  but atleast they got the fundamentals down...

It reminds me of freshman year gym class clearing the way to see if anyone can dunk. Can't fool the viewing public by make something out of nothing. WNBA isn't successful b/c they try to compare it to NBA and you can't do it. Same way any football league is compared to NFL and is seen as a joke. You need separation from the sport.

The fact that the WNBA players cleared the lane in an attempt to make this dunk a big deal is why its a big deal that she missed the dunk and barely put down the second one.

First  one can  only hope that the WBNA  can be  put out of   its misery at the  end of this season from the NBA.

I think it's ignorant to say that women aren't able to maybe play in the NBA cause of a dunk issue.  There's probably atheletes who are women who could ball in the NBA in the right spots.  Not saying they will start and being all-stars but I can't knock'em specially when they could ball some of our dude asses up here.

Note I'm not a fan of the WNBA but bashing it isn't really necessary.  Just let the ladies do their thing I'd go and watch and enjoy some fundamental hoops.  Frankly they probably have better fundamentals than some of the players that were coming out about 2000-2004/2005.

I think to say that is ignorant too. They play the game. No show boating.

I enjoy the WNBA- I played in school and dreamed of playing in the WNBA but unfortuantly knee injury blew my chance at it. There is a lot of talent in the WNBA just because they don't play like the men don't think it should be bashed for it.

Pat ~ Have you actually played basketball? There are alot of other skills besides dunking a ball. I have enjoyed watching those that can dunk without shattering their wrist or a backboard and who actually can make the basket when they are dunking; however, I also recognize other gifts on the court. When a team works the court with mastered basic skills... that is priceless!

That's crap. If dunking didn't matter they wouldn't do it. When they clear the lane and make a spectacle of a dunk then people are gonna call you on it.  No one is saying WNBA sucks because they don't dunk. They suck because they clear the lane to make a big deal out of a dunk which most high school athletes could do.

It was an all-star game. If it was a game that meant something then I'd be worried. Still, I'd rather watch the PBA than the WNBA.
