One of the most pathetic moments in my history of Cub fandom, and there have been A LOT, was during Game 2 of last season's NLDS when Ted Lilly lobbed a pitch to Chris Young. In an act of child-like frustration, Lilly slammed his glove -- throwing it much harder than his fastball, mind you -- as he watching Young drive in three runs and drive the Cubs further into the ground. It was terrible pathetic, and I've had a hard time appreciating anything Lilly has accomplished since then.
That all changed last night.
When the Cubs desperately needed to demonstrate some testicular fortitude, Lilly went out and pitched eight solid innings, allowing just one run on five hits. But that wasn't how Lilly won me back.
This was....
Yes, that's Ted Lilly, all of 185 lbs fearlessly running over 225 lb rock Yadier Molina. Molina held onto the ball and got that out, but he was forced to leave the game a few innings later.
Now you might call this a stupid move on Lilly's part, being a pitcher barreling into the catcher in the top of the 2nd, but it was an attitude adjustment the Cubs desperately needed. But yea... it was pretty dumb.
Just when I thought you couldn't get any dumber, you go and do something like this... and totally redeem yourself!
