Shawn Johnson Dead Video Angers Friends And Family
Olympics, Rumors, Hilarity

The Onion's Reporting Of Shawn Johnson's Death Angers Friends And Family

6/17/09 in Olympics   |   Pat   |   4559 respect

The above video is courtesy of The Onion. While it's a hilarious parody of something that happens all the time in horse racing, Shawn Johnson's family apparently wasn't too thrilled to see a video depicting them putting their daughter to sleep after a training accident.

For the record, Shawn Johnson is not dead. Her family refused to comment, and one of her friends and fellow gymnast Geena Pilcher called the video "over the top" and "rude".

Personally, I call it hilarious. The Onion isn't meant to be taken seriously, and in the end, they make a valid point. If horse racing is really a sport, then why do we kill the athletes if they get one little injury? Exactly.

But anyway... Shawn's family needs to lighten up. All publicity is good publicity, right? Short of her strutting her stuff on a TV celebrity dance-off, this is the only way anyone is going to care about your daughter in non-Olympic years anyway.

One thing also to remember here IQ'ers, is that her life was threatened recently by a stalker during Dancing with the Stars. I believe they ended up arresting him near the studio where they film it. Also upon a search of either his car or apartment they found duct tape, rope, knife and a wide assortment of pictures of her. The family has a right to react (or over react in some peoples opinion) when someone is poking fun at the death of their seventeen year old daughter. The Onion crossed the line.........

Sometimes I feel like reaching through the screen and chocking the people at the onion.

First, the onion is pretty funny. But putting down a horse after an injury is humane, because *most* of the time a horse simply cannot heal from a broken leg. I won't go on a tirade about it, but it is, in a lot of cases, the only thing that can be done.

That said, Sarah Palin has offered to help the Johnson family to call for the onion to be fired.

Nice shot, BluDevil.

The Johnson family needs to accept what comes with being famous. Plus get a sense of humor.

I disagree with your opinion, but I respect your perspective, and I really hope that everything turns out ok for you.

Yep, because nothing says funny like joking about the death of someones kid.

I'm gonna disagree with you here.

When it's something as ridiculous and harmless as this and the family knows that it has no validity, what's there to be angry about? This was not an attack on Shawn Johnson or her family, or anyone in particular -- it was a simple parody of racing-bred horses. If the family has anything to be mad at, it's the owners that put down the horses

Also, The Onion rocks.

They are being beyond dumb. Come on, people. Now, if it were a joke story about someone terminally ill, OK, I'd understand their sensitivity. If they were to make Muhammed Ali or Michael J. Fox, or anyone else fighting an illness, the subject of the joke, I'd also think it were out of line. However, unless Shawn Johnson has some health news that she is keeping from everyone else, her peeps need to lighten up. As far as I can tell, all Shawn Johnson has is a terminal case of hotness.

For someone not familiar with "The Onion" reading this, I can understand how they would be upset.

The family has taken the smart route though in refusing to comment.

That's classic.  You can't beat the Onion.

6/17/09   |   mk_donley   |   2554 respect

The onion should've talked with Shawn Johnson's parents first.

So once she does pull a Lohan are you still going to protect her too?  Grow up and take a joke.
