You know the old saying that the best part about spring training is that every team has a chance? It's not true at all, especially for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The instant the first pitch is thrown in their opening game, I'm crossing them off my "teams that could win it all list." Along with my Giants, of course.
But at least my Giants aren't decking guys unnecessarily during spring training games. The above video is fringe Tampa Bay player Elliot Johnson slamming into the Yankees' top catching prospect, Francisco Cervelli. And breaking his wrist in the process. Way to go Johnson, you're sure to make the team that way.
Even worse, Carl Crawford on Wednesday unloaded on Astros catcher Humberto Quintero. No video for that, unfortunately.
Now maybe I'm being too harsh here. Perhaps in spring training the D-Rays should do everything they can to injure everyone they play. Because that's about the only way they stand a chance of even finishing at .500.
[By the way, I'm aware they are now just the "Rays" but the man can't hold me down]
These games are not "meaningless spring training games" to the guys that are playing in the 9th inning. None of these guys have guaranteed jobs. they are trying to win jobs and impress coaches and front office people. Johnson was not trying to break somebody's wrist, and you can't ask a minor leaguer to "ease up". He was playing hard. it was just dumb luck the guy got hurt.
