The ridiculous continues to be routine for Tiger Woods. Eldrick, celebrating Father's Day as a dad for the first time, has never met a clutch putt that he didn't like. He's Tiger, Tiger Woods Y'all.
After his absurd final nine holes on Saturday, Sunday's final round figured to be an 18-hole victory parade as competitor after competitor wilted under the pressure of competing against the most dominant athlete of our time.
It happens during every final round in which Tiger enters with a lead. But this year's US Open offered something different, and the most unlikely adversary.
45-year old Rocco Mediate, who was honestly just elated to be in this moment, just kept sticking enough shots to stay above water, and stay in front of Woods who struggled when you expected him to pull away.
After eagling No. 13 with a jaw-dropping 60 foot putt in Round 3, Tiger left our jaws agape again with a wayward drive on the same hole Sunday. Forced to take a drop, Woods barely got himself up and in for a bogey. He would also bogey 15, and was starting to look like Kobe Bryant during the 4th quarter of Game 4.
Cough. Cough.
Tiger Woods doesn't choke though, he just likes to give himself difficult situations to overcome. After a terrible second shot on 18, Tiger was forced to play his approach out of the tight rough and what we were told to be a unfixed divot.
There's about 4-5 golfers in the world that would even have a chance to strike the approach shot like he did, part of the reason his knee is damaged like it has been, with the kind of torque needed to lift a ball out of that terrain and create some backspin. Of course, he would put it within 12 feet, and that's when the magic happened yet against at Torrey Pines, a course that might as well be named after the best golfer of all-time.
You didn't doubt he'd make the putt, did you?
From Jason Sobel's blog, a reader wrote in what might be an exaggeration, but it was hard not to feel this enthused, even if we're accustomed to Woods making these putts.
Wow. Honestly, wow. That was Bird stealing the inbounds pass, Magic's baby hook, Dave Roberts stealing second and Gibson's home run all rolled into one.Yeah, that's a little much, but that's the joy of sports. Enjoy the moment. Tiger sure as hell knows how to produce theater that Hollywood only dreams about.
Free golf tomorrow and absolutely no way Tiger leaves San Diego without his 14th major golf championship.
