MLB Closers Are A Breed Of Their Own
When Todd Jones made his way through the National League from 2003-2006 (Rockies, Reds, Phillies, Marlins) it was mandatory that we get to the Wrigley Bleacher early to partake in his shenanigans. There may be a reason he's not an elite closer, besides being out of shape and having an average arm.
Jones spends more time goofing off with fans then he does warming up. I imagine this drives Tigers fans batty most of the time, but Wednesday night his jestering came in handy during a 2 1/2 hour rain delay at the top of the fifth inning.
The Tigers closer donned a Magglio Ordonez wig (does he keep this with him at all times?) and jersey and took the field to recreate his 2006 ALCS walk-off home run that sent the Tigers to the World Series.
Coincidentally, the Tigs are playing the St. Louis Cardinals this week and managed to do something they hadn't in 2006: come from behind to win. It wasn't Todd Jones with a walk-off hit in the 9th, but just off the DL Gary Sheffield with a single to drive in Clete Thomas. Tigers 9, Cardinals 8
