Tom Kostopoulos, Montreal Canadiens Destroys Mike Van Ryn, Toronto Maple Leafs, Breaks His Face
Too Ridiculous To Just Be Fight Of The Day, This One Is The Hit Of The Year So Far

Tom Kostopoulos nailed Mike Van Ryn into the boards early in the Maple Leafs-Canadiens game. When I say he nailed him into the boards, I mean just that. He didn't just hit him like you see in every other hockey game... he absolutely drilled him.

After the hit, Van Ryn was taken to the hospital, and treated for a myriad of injuries, including a concussion, a gash on his forehead, a broken nose and a broken pinky, according to Globe and Mail.

One of the Maple Leafs' players (looked like Carlo Colaiacavo) immediately came to Van Ryn's defense and started swinging on Kostopoulos.

Kostopoulos claimed that the injuries were unintentional:

"I was just trying to get in on the forecheck and get the puck. I did not anticipate him turning. I hope he is all right. I know in my head I was not trying to hurt him."

Nice words, but the hit itself was absolutely vicious. It looks like Van Ryn may have faked him out at the last minute, but Kostopoulos was still flying across the ice with the intention of absolutely obliterating him. I guess it worked.

Anyone think Kostopoulos will be facing a fine and/or suspension for this one? Although I kinda see his point, it's hard to look at this video and think "accident". He's lucky Roger Goodell isn't the NFL commisssioner. He would have already been fined.

Dang, did I miss em addin a new rule to hockey that says it's ok to kill other players?  Yowsa.  At least it sounds like the *hitter* will sleep well at night.. what about the *hittee*?  Bet he wouldn't be sleeping so well if the positions were reversed!

Wasn't Van Ryn the one hit through the glass the other day?

How is that a legitimate hit? He had his hands on Van Ryn's name when he gave him the shot into the boards. That's a check from behind, into the boards. It's called "Boarding" and is extremely dangerous.

 From NHL.com Rules:

42.1 Boarding – A boarding penalty shall be imposed on any player or goalkeeper who checks an opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to be thrown violently in the boards. The severity of the penalty, based upon the degree of violence of the impact with the boards, shall be at the discretion of the Referee.

There is an enormous amount of judgment involved in the application of this rule by the Referees. The onus is on the player (or goalkeeper) applying the check to ensure his opponent is not in a vulnerable position and if so, he must avoid the contact. However, there is also a responsibility on the player with the puck to avoid placing himself in a dangerous and vulnerable position. This balance must be considered by the Referees when applying this rule.

Apparently, boarding is a Judgement call on how violent the hit is into the boards, whether or not the hittee was in a vulnerable position.  I'm not saying it wasn't boarding, but once again it was a judgement call by the ref.  My reference for these hits is Erik Cole, who was popped by Penguins Orpik, and that wasn't called.  Broke a vertebrae.

Like I said before, hits like these the league hopes doesn't happen, but hasn't stepped up to outright ban them.
