Wayne Ellington Saves North Carolina With Game Winning Overtime Three To Beat Clemson

Your almost daily roundup of college hoops ...

#2 North Carolina 90, #19 Clemson 88
The Tar Heels first big test of the season almost ended with its first loss. Wayne Ellington wouldn't let it happen. 36 points, 3 of which came at the buzzer in overtime. Great win for UNC to be able to make many mistakes and scratch out a tough road win against the Tigers.

Other games of note this weekend:

West Virginia 79, #11 Marquette 64
Bob Huggins team is legit. But he had some help this week from his friend Tim Floyd. USC's coach help Huggy Bear install a triangle-and-2 defense that left Marquette way out of sync.

#16 Villanova 64, #13 Pittsburgh 63
Prediction: First place to tenth place in the Big East will be separated by just 2 games. Good teams beating each other on their home courts all season.

I think you're right about West Virginia; I've never been a huge Huggy fan, but that team is easy to root for.  Alexander is a really unheralded player for them that should be getting a lot more attention.

Good win for UNC, as well.  It wasn't pretty, but a road win against a ranked conference rival is always solid.  I still don't buy them as the best team in the nation, but they are obviously in that first tier with Memphis, Kansas, and UCLA.

I just want to note again that on Saturday Xavier beat a SEC team on the road by 20+.  I'm telling you they are a top 10 team.

I already expressed what I thought about Ellington's performance in the news article so I am going to direct this towards North Carolina.

Last year I thought Frasor should have started and I still believe that if it were last year. This season, however, North Carolina looks pretty mediocre at a half court offense. At least with Frasor, things still run smoothly at at a half court or North Carolina's up-tempo if he must. Of course he is out for the season though. Another thing that struck me is that I thought Thomas cleaned up his ball handling skills. He totally killed any momentum North Carolina had towards the end of the first half with those two turnovers in a matter of seconds. Maybe the most surprising stat from the game, though, was that Clemson went deeper in their bench than North Carolina. Although Stephenson will be back which cuts Graves time, thankfully.

On a good note. Finally not just a secondary scorer in Ellington, but a proven scorer who can do it on his own when Hansbrough gets contained. I still think Roy needs to figure out his point guard situation now because Lawson can't play that fast for big minutes, Thomas looks like the project he was three years ago, and Ellington should not be bringing up the ball. All that leaves is Ginyard who is more of a forward than a guard.
