For one half we saw the Auburn football team we've been waiting for, and for one half we saw the West Virginia team we've been missing. Turns out the Mountaineers were much more comfortable being their old selves than the visiting Tigers.
The Tigers were very impressive for the first 25 minutes, going back to their pound the ball roots. Newly appointed quarterback Kodi Burns was very efficient and the defense intercepted Pat White twice in the first quarter. Auburn led 17-3 and at the same time, the SEC school got a little too comfortable with their newfound success, while West Virginia finally clicked.
Noel Devine was able to find the holes and use his ridiculous speed to jet for several 15+ yard runs, capping his night off with a 30-yard touchdown run to put the deficit out of reach in the 4th quarter. Devine finished with a career-high 207 yards.
The most stunning stat was that Auburn managed just 33 yards in the second half after rolling up 227 in the first. That's basically the Tigers season in a nutshell. You're not sure which version will show up.
Great win for Bill Stewart, who very much needed a convincing win over a noteworthy opponent to get the doubters off his back for at least a few weeks.
