Will Power airlifted to hospital with severe injuries after crash in IRL practice
Massive crash results in airlifting of IRL driver
10
There was a huge crash during Saturday's practice at Infineon Raceway on Saturday.

Nelson Philippe, a rookie on the IRL circuit, had spun out just beyond a hill on a curve. Philippe's car was sideways on the outside of the turn, right in the normal groove for cars coming out of the blind curve. Philippe's car was grazed by another drive, but that was just a preview of the impending horrific crash.

Powers, currently 16th in the IRL standings, came over the crest and t-boned Philippe's car. Power was airlifted to a nearby hospital. He is reportedly alert today, but with severe injuries including several broken vertebrates.

Philippe was also taken to the hospital by ambulance with serious foot and leg injuries as well as a concussion.

Both men were awake this morning in the hospital. Here's hoping for speedy recoveries for both.

what happened to the flaggers at this corner? several seconds elapsed between the first spin and the impact....at first look this is a crash that could and should have been avoided......

Hopefully they both recover and can race again.  TJ is right, if the flagmen were paying attention, this crash could've been avoided.

I'm not so sure. It's a blind corner and Phillippe is right on the racing line. It looks to me like the car was stalled on the worst possible area of the track

there should be flagmen before the corner to warn oncoming drivers of any problem in that blind spot...no excuse for this wreck....hope that the drivers recover and are ok

I agree that he stalled at the worst possible part of the track at Sonoma.  You can't see crap coming up over the crest of that hill, it's definitely a blind spot.  However, if the flagmen had waved a local yellow, drivers would've known to slow down coming up over the hill.  Power may still have hit him, but the impact wouldn't have been nearly as severe as it was.

during the race they said that the yellow flag was waving but that the drivers ignored it and were at racing speed as they came over the hill.....

not a bad race to watch, Franchiti led flag to flag but there was some good racing behind him and quite a few passes along the way.....

Yeah, that's as good as it gets at that track. Fans call it Snorenoma or Infenio-yawn for a reason.

Yet another reason I'm not a fan of road racing, especially that place.

It can be an acquired taste, but if done right, they can be exciting, or at least not as tedious as the middle 2 hours of a NASCAR race.

I'm not sure there's anything that can help Sonoma, period.  The races seem like follow-the-leader and a snoozefest no matter what series races there.
