Videos of the Year: IndyCar Championship Comes Down To Final Lap
READ MORE:

Shockingly, we've already entered this portion of the calendar. It's time to do that year in review sort of thing, so over the final days of 2007 we'll be looking back on the top sports events as highlighted by FanIQ. Since I'm hardly a wordsmith, you'll notice this amount to a video recap ...

Rare is it in racing where the championship isn't decided until the final lap of the race. That, however, is what happened this year in the IndyCar series. With the white flag out, it was simple. Whoever won the race, Dario Franchitti or Scott Dixon, would win the championship. In the end, Franchitti won when Dixon heartbreakingly ran out of fuel. It was a finale that couldn't be scripted, despite NASCAR's best efforts to do so with their contrived Chase.

Of course, then Dario defected to NASCAR, but let's not dwell on that unpleasanteness, and instead enjoy the best finish to a racing series this year.

(Note: There are shorter versions of this out there, but this one has Ashley Judd footage, so it wins.)

In the long term, Dario Franchitti and Sam Hornish leaving for NASCAR could be a good thing for the IRL.  Danica Patrick will win a race this year, Marco Andretti should win multiple races, and new mainstream star Helio Castroneves might be the best driver left in the series.  If those three can step up, from a marketing perspective, the IRL would be in good shape.

I'd concur if it weren't for all the bad press the IRL got for it (mostly by ignorant southern NAPCAR writers). No one knew who Franchitti was until May. The only reason anyone cared about Hornish was because he's American. He has the personality of a grapefruit. Obviously, Helio helps, even though I'd say Dixon and Kanaan are better. It would help more if the season started before March.
