Vikings re-sign special teamer Marvin Mitchell to 1-year deal
Marvin Mitchell was primarily used in a special teams role by the Minnesota Vikings last season. Although, Marvin Mitchell did step into a starting role at weakside linebacker with Erin Henderson sidelined in Week 3 and 4 due to a concussion last season. Marvin Mitchell finished with four tackles on the defense, and five tackles plus a forced fumble on special teams while appearing in 11 games for the Minnesota Vikings last season.
Before signing with the Minnesota Vikings as a free agent ahead of the 2011 season, Marvin Mitchell spent one year in Miami, playing all 16 games (with zero starts) for the Dolphins. Marvin Mitchell was originally a seventh round pick in the 2007 NFL draft by the New Orleans Saints, with whom he spent his first four career season.
The Minnesota Vikings now have six linebackers on the roster, with Chad Greenway and Henderson returning as starters for 2013. Linebackers, Audie Cole, Marvin Mitchell, Larry Dean and Tyrone McKenzie are behind them on the depth chart.
The Minnesota Vikings are still searching for an option at middle after losing linebacker Jasper Brinkley during free agency. He signed a two-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals two weeks ago.
While Marvin Mitchell provides the Minnesota Vikings with depth at their linebacker corps, his biggest role still figures to be special teams.
Moreover, it’s likely that the Minnesota Vikings could draft a middle linebacker in the top two rounds. They have three pick of the top 52 picks in April’s draft. There also the possibility of Minnesota Vikings’ seventh round pick in the 2012 NFL draft, Audie Cole, working his way up to starting linebacker spot.
Meanwhile, by re-signing Marvin Mitchell, the Minnesota Vikings have brought back seven of their restricted free agents this offseason. Right tackle Phil Loadholt, safety Jamarca Sandord, fullback Jerome Felton, receiver Jerome Simpson, offensive lineman Joe Berger and linebacker Erin Henderson all re-signed with the Minnesota Vikings on March 12. Only Wide receiver Devin Aromashodu remains unsigned after Jasper Brinkley landed in Arizona and guard Geoff Schwartz signed a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs.
