Vince Wilfork is most likely out for the season with torn Achilles tendon

The Patriots' win over the Falcons was an extremely costly one

The bad news: All-world nose tackle Vince Wilfork is done for the season with a torn Achilles tendon.

Wilfork is arguably the Patriots' most important defensive player, and he has been an outstanding run-stuffer for the Patriots for years. He routinely clogged the middle for the New England defense, and required double teams from the opposing offensive line.

Without Wilfork, the Patriots will be relying heavily on Tommy Kelly to fill the void. Hopefully he can provide them with quality play while Wilfork is gone.

One of the most telling stats regarding how badly Wilfork will be missed was in the ESPN article about his injury:

Over the last five seasons, the Patriots allow 4.1 yards per rush with Wilfork on the field, which is ninth-best in the NFL. When Wilfork is off the field, the Patriots rank last in the NFL in yards per rush allowed (5.0), according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Yup. He'll definitely be missed by the Patriots.

Hate injuries and achilles injuries always make me squeamish.

That run stat is a pretty big deal. If you can run for yards against New England, shorten the game, and keep Tom Brady off the field you can win and it just got a whole lot easier.

I was so sad when I saw this. He's awesome. Lots of rough injuries yesterday :(
