Vince Young Did Not Want To Play Second Half Of Titans/Chargers 2007 Playoff Game

The Titans Should Probably Let Vince Young Go
9/15/08

I know the news about Vince Young of late has not been good. We've found out that he's way too sensitive to criticism, which is not a good trait to have as an NFL quarterback.

And we all know that he initially refused to go back into Week 1's game against the Jaguars before finally being coerced to get back in there. But now, apparently, we've come to learn that this wasn't exactly the first time that an episode like this has happened.  According to NFL Network's Adam Schefter, it's been happening for a long, long time.

"There's a lot we don't know about Vince Young, but now there's more and more that we do know. We do know that in last season's wild-card loss to the Chargers, Young had a similar circumstance to the one he experienced during the opener.

He went in at halftime and basically had to be persuaded to go back out onto the field to play again against San Diego in the second half of that game -- very similar to the opener when he wanted to take himself out of the game.

You go back to his rookie year, they were scheduled to play the Philadelphia Eagles, and he missed a flight to Philadelphia. At that time, he acted as if it was the Titans fault that they left him behind, rather than it being his fault that he was late for the flight. He had to be persuaded to come to Philadelphia. He wanted the Titans to go on without him.
"

By the way, here's the incredible thing about that Chargers playoff game last season. The Titans were actually winning 6-0 at halftime. Are you kidding me? The guy actually wanted to quit playing when his team was winning. I'm not sure I've ever heard of that happening before. Naturally, you know how the second half went. The Chargers poured on 17 unanswered points and won.

I think the problem we have here is that Young, in all likelihood, hasn't faced any significant criticism at any point in his life, and now he's getting loads of it in the NFL and can't handle it.

And frankly, he needs to be criticized to improve. His throwing motion is terrible, his accuracy is even worse, and he makes bad decisions that he can't get away with anymore in the NFL..

Considering we already know what Young is capable of at his current best - an early playoff exit - why should the Titans hang on to him if they know he won't improve?

There really isn't any reason I can think of.

There are too many other QB's floating around out there who WANT to play and are just as good as he is now.  If the man does have some emotional issues, get them taken care of, at team expense and give him one more shot... if not, cut him loose and move on - time to cut your losses!

I think if he is having these problems people shouldn't be taking it so lightly. I am not speaking from experience (I don't get depressed often or nothing), but it seems like the good thing to do would be to give him support. On ESPN, one of the commentators said he should 'suck it up, he's an NFL quarterback." Look at Terry Bradshaw, he was hit with a 17 year case of depression, and fear of being in front of large groups of people. People supported him. I am only 20 years old, so maybe I don't know how the world works quite yet, but just because someone makes $7 million a year doesn't mean we shouldn't be empathic towards their situation.

Honestly, ask yourself this, "How would you feel if 60,000+ people boo'ed you because you couldn't throw a 22 oz. ball?"
