
Coles, the team's leading returner in receptions from a year ago, will undergo an MRI in the near future to determine exactly what's wrong. He had offseason surgery on the same knee to repair a torn PCL, but doctors say that this injury is unrelated.
This is a blow to an offense that struggled through the air against a mediocre secondary in the season opener. Virginia Tech lacks depth at the position after the departures of four-year lettermen Jarrett Boykin and Danny Coale.
There were multiple occasions where the receivers seemed to have some sort of miscommunication with quarterback Logan Thomas. This is bound to happen with the inexperienced players coach Frank Beamer has to put on the field.
Fifth-year senior Dyrell Roberts is expected to take over Coles' role, who missed nearly the entire 2011 season with a broken arm.
Coles will be eligible to apply for a medical redshirt.
