Did anyone see that David Stern hired a former General of the US Army Corps Of Engineers to be in charge of the NBA's referees? In a position now called senior vice president of referee operations, Stern has put Ronald L. Johnson in charge of its referees. He will be responsible for all aspects of the NBA's officiating program, including recruiting, training and development, scheduling, data management and analysis, and work rules enforcement.
Will Johnson be able to stay with these guys 24/7? How much of an impact will this really have? Ultimately, all of the training and controlling in the world may improve character, but will this actually improve in game officiating? Correct me if I'm wrong, but a lot of officiating and refereeing is reactionary. I'm not saying it's not important to know the rules; it is. A lot of these guys get caught up in the game, rather than enforcing the game. I'm just not sure if this is the right thing.
What will we have next? Referee boot camps? Referee detention centers? Referee proving grounds??
