Completing a perfect 16-0 record is a great story, one which we'll remember for a long time, but the best story of this 2007 NFL season is the Washington Redskins regrouping after the death of Sean Taylor.
No one is better in the game, perhaps in its history, as Bill Belichick at creating fake adversity to motivate his Patriots. New England comes out with a chip on their shoulder every single week looking to prove someone wrong. It's an impressive feat, but what's even more is overcoming real life adversity.
Just 5 weeks after their emotional leader and Pro Bowl safety was killed, Washington's season has new life. Following Taylor's shocking death, the Redskins playoff hopes appeared headed for the same ending. Credit Joe Gibbs and Clinton Portis for keeping this season in tact.
"I feel every time I step on that field something is carrying me," he said in a corridor outside the team's locker room after last night's three-touchdown victory over Dallas.
"All of the stuff you step on the field thinking about is gone. I don't step on the field worrying about being hurt. I don't step on the field worried about anything. When I step on the field, I think, 'Man, I got the strength of two people. And it's going to be so hard to stop.'"
On Portis' first touchdown run, the strength of two people wasn't enough to bring him down.
In a season that's been so Patriot-centric, the Washington Redskins are who should be celebrated. Oh, and winning Sunday by chilling 21 points was a nice touch as well.
