Washington Redskins' Name Fight gets nasty

Blog Photo - Washington Redskins' Name Fight gets nastyI'm getting use to seeing the Redskins' name fight news come up on my timeline everywhere.  Today, however, that timeline got a complete shock.

The Onion, known for shock value headlines, posted a headline today and made me sick to my stomach:

"Redskins' Kike Owner refuses to change Team's Offensive Name"

Go ahead and read it, but heed my warning.  It is laced with derrogatory names against Jews, as if calling Daniel Snyder names is going to somehow change his mind about the name of his team.

While looking around at other sites that give information about the ongoing name battle, I stumbled on one that listed twelve trademark applications that are deemed less offensive than the "Redskins".

I honestly don't know how this will end.  I don't even know how I feel about it any more.  I am a fan of the Washington Redskins, an NFL team.  Will I still be a fan if the name is changed to one less controversial?  Of course I will.  But if the name is changed, who is next?  Seahawks?  Braves?  Blackhawks?

Any new thoughts on this as the battle continues?

Those don't have the same connotation.

Now Ashlie, you know they do. Every one of those end with a question mark.

I understand getting annoyed about the Angels and Saints. The Onion is actually a satire site, so it's their goal to irritate people (or rather, make them laugh.) I'm betting the headline and following jabs in the article were trying to make a point, because both words have pretty much the same connotation.

I didn't actually know that.  I've seen links to the Onion before, but never clicked on one until today.....

crawling back into my northern den again..................

You want to hear something semi related but really not at all. I read that the Washington fan base, the folks actually living up there in DC "love, love, love" Dan Snyder. I am ahmazed, I thought everyone disliked him as much as I and Debi do, but, they don't. That's just crazy....

LOL I know, Seahawks didn't really fit, I was just kind of pissed off.  At the bottom of the "related articles" thingy was a thing about the Angels and Saints, and that kind of sent me over the edge.  I had to get up and go outside and yank some weeds.  I guess it's about the intention.  Sorry, 'bout that  frown

I think I heard/read a rumor just recently that they applied for a trademark on the name Washington Warriors - I may have dreamed that though, I don't know. I don't think it's been confirmed anywhere.

Y'all know how I feel about this, so I won't rehash it. I'm not sure where "seahawks" came in though...I'm pretty sure that's just something else they call an osprey.

Calling names rarely works. I know Mr Snyder said he would "never" change the name of the team. But, I have been reading where some "name polls" have been circulating, and the rumor mill is running rampant, and I wish I could get a source closer to the source that says, the organization is actually behind it all. Does it really matter if the team changes its name, No, cause like Debi I am a fan of them and will continue to be regardless of the name. They could be the Washington Pigskins, which I am actually in favor of, or the Washington Warriors, or even the Washingtonians, really it is just a name. The history of the team doesn't change just because the name did.

I have many, many native North American Indian friends, and I wouldn't call any of them by any of those names.

I don't walk up to a friend and refer to them by their race.  Yo, Cree! Hey, Metis! Wassup Haida! 'S'happening Redskin?  Hiya Brave!
It just doesn't happen.  I don't think any of the names were intended to be racial, but rather honorary.  It doesn't matter any longer how a name was intended to be interpreted.  Political correctness has rendered any slang name inappropriate, so yes, I believe the rest will be on the chopping block.

Oh yeah, and now they are talking about the Angels and Saints.

I understand.
