Wayne Rooney is on Manchester United’s lengthy injury list once again
Wayne Rooney’s purple patch has arrived yet again. The Manchester United forward has been sidelined for two to three weeks after picking up an injury in a training session before the match against Newcastle United.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed Wayne Rooney will be out for at least two weeks. The Scotsman also informed that Wayne Rooney was suffering from a torn ligament in his knee.
The 26-year-old England international watched from the sidelines as Manchester United grabbed a pulsating 4-3 victory over Newcastle United. The injury-hit team once again came from behind to grab three points from the match and go clear seven points at the top of the English Premier League table.
Sir Alex Ferguson told reporters that Manchester United will have to be on their toes in the next couple of weeks as Wayne Rooney could be absent from the squad till mid-January.
“Wayne had a volley yesterday towards the end of training and he's torn the ligament in the back of his knee,” Sir Alex Ferguson added.
Wayne Rooney’s lack lustrous form against Swansea City was also discussed. The Old Trafford boss admitted Wayne Rooney wasn’t at his best in the 1-1 draw against Swansea City on Sunday. Sir Alex Ferguson said that he was expecting Wayne Rooney to make a big comeback against Newcastle United.
“He could be out for two or three weeks which is unfortunate because I thought after his performance on Sunday he could be brilliant, you know you don't have two performances like Wayne did on Sunday. He was desperate to play and unfortunately couldn't risk him,” Sir Alex Ferguson said.
By the turn of the year Manchester United once again have a lengthy injury list, which includes Ashley Young, Phil Jones and Danny Welbeck. All of these players were also sidelined from Manchester United’s last game.
“Danny Welbeck took ill in the team hotel yesterday [Tuesday] and Ashley Young got injured in training also. Phil Jones got his injury last week against Swansea,” Sir Alex Ferguson added.
Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic remained on the bench against Newcastle United after making his first start in three months against Swansea City.
“We couldn't risk Vida after his first game at Swansea, he had some soreness in his knee after being out for so long which is to be expected,” Sir Alex Ferguson explained the absence of Nemanja Vidic.
