Week 12 Upset Alert: Trouble in Paradise
With that in mind, here are three teams that should be on upset alert this weekend:
#16 Michigan State (at Nebraska)
Michigan State's defense is really good. The Spartans have only allowed nine points in their last three games, and that's including a game against a top 20 team in Michigan. But the question is, can they win a meaningful road game? They've only played one against difficult competition this season and it resulted in a loss at Notre Dame. After being seemingly down and out following a loss to Minnesota, the Huskers have rebounded with wins over Northwestern and Michigan. Fans that despise Ohio State should be rooting for Michigan State to take care of business here since I think they're the Big Ten's only hope of stopping the Buckeyes. But something tells me Nebraska will give the Spartans all they can handle....and then some. With an upset win, Bo Pelini's team likely heads to the Big Ten title game to meet Urban Meyer's squad.
#7 Auburn (vs. #25 Georgia)
Georgia hasn't had the type of success that they wanted to have this season. Injuries is a huge reason for that, but even without key players, this is still a good team. That's why Auburn better not be looking ahead to the Iron Bowl showdown with Alabama at the end of the month. On paper, Auburn's incredible offense should run circles around Georgia's less than stellar defense. But as we all know, the games aren't played on paper. Even though the Bulldogs' chances of playing Alabama in the SEC title game for a second straight year are slim, a win here would still give them a shot at it. Again, beware of the look-ahead factor in this spot for the Tigers.
#4 Stanford (at USC)
In late September, the spread for this game may have been about 50 in favor of the Cardinal. Now, Ed Orgeron has USC looking like USC. That could mean trouble for a Stanford team that is coming off of a massive victory over Oregon. Any time you play a game of that magnitude, there's always the potential for a letdown the following week. David Shaw is a fantastic coach and he'll have his team prepared; but given the way the Trojans have been playing, this will be no easy task. Orgeron is a master motivator and he will make it very clear to his players what a win would mean. Not only would it end Stanford's outside chance at a national title game appearance, but it would also send Orgeron way up the list of potential coaches that Pat Haden would hire as the new head coach at USC.
