Plenty Of Duds Lost My Fantasy Championship, How About Yours? [Fantasy Football Studs And Duds]
I had Peyton Manning going Thursday night, and he was a major stud, getting 36 points for me(the scoring system benefits quarterbacks greatly). Following the game, ESPN’s projections had me winning 159-150. The rest of my lineup was Michael Turner(projected for 14), Matt Forte(projected for 30), T.J. Houshmandzadeh(projected for 23), Andre Johnson(projected for 23), Chris Cooley(projected for 9), Pittsburgh Steelers(projected for 10), and Jason Hanson(projected for 14).
If you’re wondering why somebody like Houshmandzadeh would be projected for 23 fantasy points, it’s a PPR(point per reception) league. Andre Johnson got 37 points for me in week 15 thanks to that.
With my kicker situation, I got cute. I had Stephen Gostkowski in my lineup, but saw how bad the snow was and figured it would be low-scoring and bad for kicking, so I picked up Jason “Mmm Bop” Hanson. Plus, I predicted Hanson would be the best kicker of the week as he was 21/22 on field goals this year, the Lions struggle to get into the end zone, they’d be able to move the ball well against a bad New Orleans defense, he was 8 of 8 on field goals over 50 yards and we get 5 points for those, it was indoors, etc.
Well, Hanson was a major dud, getting me just an extra point, while Gostkowski got 17 fantasy points. As for the rest of the team, Michael Turner got 13, Matt Forte got 14, T.J. Houshmandzadeh got none, Andre Johnson got 3, Chris Cooley got 6, and the Steelers got 1.
My week 16 team outside of Peyton Manning, is the fantasy dud of the year. I lost 115-77. So Peyton Manning gets 36 points, the rest of the team just 41. Pathetic.
Feel free to share your stories about how you were also screwed, or saved by fantasy studs and duds this week.
Anyway, I give you the rest of the studs and duds of week 16. Scoring is from ESPN’s standard league settings…
QB: Peyton Manning(26 Points). If not for him, my fantasy team would’ve looked worse than the Lions this week. 29/34, 364 passing yards, 3 touchdowns… that’s about as good as you can play.
Philip Rivers(27 Points). 4 touchdown passes and 284 yards passing. Just doing what he’s done all year, and showing why he should be in the Pro Bowl.
Didn’t Forget Ya: Jay Cutler(27 Points), Matt Cassel(26 Points), Tyler Thigpen(25 Points), Drew Brees(22 Points), David Garrard(21 Points), Tarvaris Jackson(20 Points).
RB: DeAngelo Williams(34 Points). It certainly didn’t help that the guy I played against had DeAngelo, as the Panthers running back ran for 4 touchdowns and 108 yards against a solid Giants run defense. In the last 8 games, he has 14 touchdowns.
Brandon Jacobs(26 Points). It’s possible plenty of people benched Jacobs as a knee injury that forced him to miss week 15 had people questioning how effective he would be. He didn’t look 100%, but still found the end zone 3 times.
Didn’t Forget Ya: Derrick Ward(21 Points), LaMont Jordan(19 Points), Le’Ron McClain(19 Points), Willis McGahee(18 Points).
WR: Marques Colston(21 Points). Going up against Detroit, Colston’s owners expected a big performance out of him, and he delivered. Colston had 9 catches for 99 yards and 2 touchdowns. This was his biggest fantasy day of the year, and it couldn’t have come at a better time for those of you Colston owners that were in the championship game.
Johnnie Lee Higgins(17 Points). Unless you’re in a league that counts return yardage, nobody should’ve had this guy on their roster. He caught 3 passes for 56 yards, had a receiving touchdown, and an 80-yard punt return touchdown for the Raiders.
Didn’t Forget Ya: Antonio Bryant(16 Points), Dennis Northcutt(16 Points), Hines Ward(16 Points), Justin Gage(16 Points), Larry Fitzgerald(16 Points), Reggie Wayne(16 Points).
TE: Visanthe Shiancoe(25 Points). Wow, maybe a lot of ladies have given him some positive feedback about his exposed dong to boost his confidence. Visanthe had 7 receptions with a whopping 136 yards, and 2 touchdowns.
Didn’t Forget Ya: Anthony Fasano(16 Points), Antonio Gates(16 Points), Dallas Clark(16 Points).
K: Stephen Gostkowski(17 Points). Sigh. An impressive 4 of 4 on field goals in heavy snow, and 5 extra points.
Didn’t Forget Ya: Matt Stover(15 Points), Kris Brown(13 Points), Nate Kaeding(13 Points), Rian Lindell(13 Points).
D/ST: Cincinnati Bengals(27 Points). Since they’re awful, I can’t think anybody out there would be playing them. At the same time, any defense against Ken Dorsey can have a big day. The Bengals shutout the Browns, picked Dorsey off 3 times(returned 1 of them for a touchdown), and Bruce Gradkowski once.
Didn’t Forget Ya: Tennessee Titans(20 Points), Seattle Seahawks(15 Points).
QB: Kurt Warner(1 Point). Some of you were probably scared away by the snow and didn’t play him, thankfully. Still Matt Cassel threw for 345 yards and 3 touchdowns in it. Completing just 6 passes in 18 attempts for 30 yards is crap in a hurricane even. It’s a joke that Warner and his Cardinals gets to play in the playoffs.
Brett Favre(3 Points). Like Warner, Favre had to deal with snow. However, freaking Seneca Wallace was able to complete 72% of his passes and throw a touchdown. Favre threw for 187 yards and 2 interceptions against a pass defense that’s still ranked last in the league after that game.
You Stunk Too: Kyle Orton(5 Points), Donovan McNabb(7 Points).
RB: Joseph Addai(0 Points). Fantasy owners tracked his injury status everyday until Thursday night, and got the great news that he’d play. Well he was active, but didn’t play. You weren’t expecting a great performance out of him, but at least for him to get his hands on the ball ONCE. Maddening.
Marion Barber(0 Points). Just like Addai’s situation, except Barber found the field, and touched the ball 3 times. Oh boy! 2 carries for 0 carries and 1 catch for 7 yards. At the same time, you shouldn’t have played him against the Ravens anyway.
You Stunk Too: Tim Hightower(2 Points), Willie Parker(2 Points), Warrick Dunn(3 Points), DeShaun Foster(4 Points), Jonathan Stewart(4 Points), P.J. Pope(4 Points), Adrian Peterson(6 Points).
WR: Andre Johnson(1 Point). I’m so mad at him. Well, maybe I should be more upset with Matt Schaub for only targeting Johnson 4 times. Johnson had just 2 catches for 19 yards, after getting 11 catches for 207 yards and a touchdown against a terrific Titans defense in the previous week. What’s going to anger me even more, is when he has an amazing game this week against my Bears.
Bernard Berrian(-1 Point). Negative points for a wide receiver? Ouch. That’s what happens when you fumble a punt and get just 2 catches for 18 yards.
You Stunk Too: Steve Breaston(0 Points), T.J. Houshmandzadeh(0 Points), DeSean Jackson(1 Point), Devin Hester(1 Point), Dwayne Bowe(2 Points), Roddy White(2 Points), Santana Moss(2 Points), Anthony Gonzalez(3 Points), Braylon Edwards(3 Points), Lance Moore(3 Points).
TE: Dustin Keller(0 Points). Just 1 reception for 1 yard, but that’s the only time Favre threw his way. The rookie tight end out of Purdue had multiple catches in the previous 8 games.
You Stunk Too: Chris Cooley(2 Points).
K: Jason Hanson. I already explained why I expected him to have a good game, and it’s not his fault the incompetent Lions only gave him one chance to kick the ball, being just an extra point. Still, I’m angry.
You Stunk Too: Phil Dawson(0 Points), Jeff Reed(1 Point), Neil Rackers(1 Point), David Akers(3 Points), John Kasay(3 Points), Mason Crosby(3 Points).
D/ST: Tampa Bay Buccaneers(-6 Points). Incredibly disappointing performance for a team trying to get in the playoffs, and at home where they’re usually dominant. They allowed 41 points, and didn’t force a turnover. If you have a week 17 in your fantasy league, this might be the best defense to play. This game was embarrassing so they’ll be looking for a huge game defensively, they’re playing against an awful Raiders offense, and they must have this game to get into the playoffs.
You Stunk Too: New York Giants(-4 Points), Carolina Panthers(-3 Points), Pittsburgh Steelers(-3 Points), Minnesota Vikings(1 Point).
