Final NFC Wild Card Team and AFC Seeding To Finally Be Decided [NFL Sunday Live Thread]

12/30/12 in NFL   |   Jess   |   32912 respect

Welcome to FanIQ's Pregame show and Live Game Thread for Week 17! This week Eric (gearhead) and I decided to join forces for a special edition for the final day of the regular season.

Blog Photo - Week 17 FanIQ Sunday Pre-Game and Live ThreadEric: When it comes to Week 17, I go by a simple formula: What does each team have to play for? As such, this week is probably when I'm at my least statistically inclined. You should all be thrilled by that.

Jess: Playoff scenarios confuse me anyway, and it's a crazy one in the NFC this year. I won't try to get all analytic on anyone either.

Let's do this.

Early Games:

Texans @ Colts

Blog Photo - Week 17 FanIQ Sunday Pre-Game and Live ThreadEric: Intriguing game. The Texans are playing for the #1 seed, but their best player is having heart troubles (believe me, nothing to joke about there). The Colts have the 5th seed locked up, but have Chuck Pagano coming back. In the end, I'll note that the Colts are being outscored for the season, which almost always screams future regression, and take Houston.

Jess: What are the talking heads saying? That Houston has never won in Indy? I think this changes this week. They are a good team who suffered a tough loss last week. I think they bounce back today against the Colts, Pagano or not.

Bucs @ Falcons

Blog Photo - Week 17 FanIQ Sunday Pre-Game and Live ThreadEric: I'm writing this on a Friday night after a night out. I have no idea if Atlanta is resting starters (and am too lazy to look), but either way I'll pick them because the Bucs are one of about 10 teams that appear to be in open implosion.

Jess: I'm sure Atlanta will be resting their starters, but I'm also pretty sure it won't matter.

Jets @ Bills

Blog Photo - Week 17 FanIQ Sunday Pre-Game and Live ThreadEric: Greg McElroy has a concussion, which means we're back to Sanchez! Enjoy it, because it could be our last chance to openly laugh at him and the dumpster fire that is these Jets. (Pick: Bills)

Jess: What on earth is Rex Ryan doing? I'm not a big Tebow supporter myself, but he's got to be better than what Sanchez has been doing recently. The kid wants to play, if nothing else Sanchez should be benched for being awful, period, even if Rex himself went under center (there's a visual). Pretty sure the Bills win. If we have to watch Sanchez though, please let there be another butt fumble or something equally as entertaining.

Ravens @ Bengals

Blog Photo - Week 17 FanIQ Sunday Pre-Game and Live ThreadEric: The Ravens in theory could get into the #3 seed, while the Bengals are locked into the #6 seed. Barring some eleven dimensional chess or some *bleep* like that, I like the Ravens. At least as much as one can like the Ravens in anything other than a bar fight.

Jess: ...but isn't eleven dimensional chess the very definition of the NFL this season? This might be a pretty good game, actually. I haven't seen much from either team but just because you said it would be weird if the Bengals win, I pick them.

Bears @ Lions

Blog Photo - Week 17 FanIQ Sunday Pre-Game and Live ThreadEric: As much as I would love for Chicago to complete its collapse, the fact that the Lions are essentially just Stafford throwing to Megatron in triple coverage at this point means I have to pick the Bears.

Jess: Hmmm. Lions. Just because.

Jaguars @ Titans

Eric: Woof. (Pick: That this game wasn't actually played, and that all accounts of it were created by the Illuminati.)

Blog Photo - Week 17 FanIQ Sunday Pre-Game and Live Thread
Jess: I *knew* this would be your woof game! Jags, for my daughter.

Panthers @ Saints

Blog Photo - Week 17 FanIQ Sunday Pre-Game and Live ThreadEric: This game doesn't mean anything, but the offenses are both good enough that it should at least be entertaining. As well as Carolina's been playing lately, I'll still take New Orleans, as they celebrate keeping Sean Payton away from the Cowboys.

Jess: 1) I think *because* this game isn't for anything but pride, we may see Cam Newton pouting. 2) Even when the Saints were awful to start the season and Brees was having a rough time emotionally, he still played his best. 3) The Sean Payton news is a boost. Saints win.

Eagles @ Giants

Blog Photo - Week 17 FanIQ Sunday Pre-Game and Live ThreadEric: Andy Reid's (presumably) last game and the return of Michael Vick! Awesome. As much as we all feared the Giants, I think at this point they've proven that they are not that good. So what the hell? Eagles win, because that seems like the kind of thing these Eagles would do.

I'm aware I've likely just guaranteed a Giants-Packers playoff game somehow.

Jess: I like the Eagles pick...because it's insane on the surface but makes sense if you've been watching this season.

Browns @ Steelers

Eric: The Steelers may be out of the playoffs, but at least they get to beat up on someone named Thad Lewis!

/realizes that due to being in Northeast Ohio on Sunday, I'll have to watch this game
/haz a sad

Blog Photo - Week 17 FanIQ Sunday Pre-Game and Live ThreadJess: Can this be my "Woof" game? No? You're right, I've never done that before...but if I did, this would be it. Only because I can't find it in myself to care. Didn't the Browns win the first game of this series? They'll probably split, but I pick the Browns again just for kicks.

Late Games:

Rams @ Seahawks

Blog Photo - Week 17 FanIQ Sunday Pre-Game and Live ThreadEric: The Seahawks are this year's test case of the narrative that one must "peak at the right time" to win the Super Bowl. You know, unless they don't win the Super Bowl, in which case that narrative will be ignored for something else. For now, they will win because they are the better team and their home field advantage is off the charts. I'm not just saying that because Jess knows too much about me and I have to stay on her good side. Nope. No siree.

Blog Photo - Week 17 FanIQ Sunday Pre-Game and Live ThreadJess: No need to say that on my account...we all know how crazy the 12th Man is. I'm nervous about this game. Not only will I not be there this week, but I just really hope the Hawks aren't overlooking the Rams as much as their fans are. St. Louis plays tough on the road, and they play tough against their division. It was Seattle's worst game of the season. However, between Sherm not getting into the Pro Bowl and winning his appeal, I have a feeling *he* will have a good game, anyway. And Russell Wilson might feel the need to prove himself against a team that picked him off 3 times last time they faced each other. As usual, I won't make a pick, and just know that I'm not as comfortable with this game as most of the fans.

Chiefs @ Broncos

Blog Photo - Week 17 FanIQ Sunday Pre-Game and Live ThreadEric: The Broncos are playing for a first round bye, if not the #1 seed. The Chiefs are playing because they are contractually obligated to. Not a hard decision when you put it that way.

Jess: We may see a record score differential this week.

Packers @ Vikings

Blog Photo - Week 17 FanIQ Sunday Pre-Game and Live ThreadEric: The facts about this game: 1.) The Packers clinch the #2 seed with a win; 2.) The Vikings clinch a playoff berth with a win; 3.) Adrian Peterson needs 208 yards to break Eric Dickerson's record; 4.) He ran for 211 the last time he played Green Bay; 5.) Aaron Rodgers is on fire; 6.) Jared Allen is my least favorite player outside of a certain quarterback with multiple accusations of sexual assault; 7.) Adrian Peterson is terrifying to this Packers fan; 8.) As a homer, I must pick the Packers, but I don't feel especially confident about it.

Jess: Am I correct in thinking the Packers have a tough time stopping the run this year? And the Vikings obviously aren't very good against the passing game. I don't see the Vikings calling one pass play this game, with AD looking to break the record. This game could easily be watched in its entirety on the RedZone Channel. I pick Green Bay, but I'm not necessarily confident either.

Dolphins @ Pats

Blog Photo - Week 17 FanIQ Sunday Pre-Game and Live ThreadEric: The Pats are also in the #1 or #2 seed hunt. The Dolphins are mediocre as always. They might not blow them out, but New England should win without much difficulty.

Jess: Pats

Raiders @ Chargers

Eric: Woof. (Prediction: Anyone watching this game starts reevaluating their life midway through the second quarter.)

Blog Photo - Week 17 FanIQ Sunday Pre-Game and Live ThreadJess: Two woofs in one week? Wow. I think the Chargers win big, cementing Turner's undeserved HC security yet another year.

Cardinals @ 49ers

Blog Photo - Week 17 FanIQ Sunday Pre-Game and Live ThreadEric: The Niners haven't looked that great since the start of the second half or so in Foxboro. Going up against Brian Hoyer should fix that.

Jess: I was more disappointed in the Pats play in that game than I was impressed with the Niners - the entire game. The Pats are much better than they played, and I feel the Niners just got lucky. They're also beat up a bit. Cardinals D isn't bad but I'm not sure their offense can keep up...unless Hoyer is the new Flynn. (Praying)

Primetime:

Cowboys @ Redskins

Blog Photo - Week 17 FanIQ Sunday Pre-Game and Live ThreadEric: For the second straight year the Cowboys face a win and in, lose and out game in Week 17 on Sunday Night Football. Obviously, the Romo-Garrett combination has had plenty of high profile failures over the years. However, DC is an especially snake bitten sports town. As examples I give you the Nationals in Game 5, the Capitals every postseason, and the Wizards entire existence. Which of these is going to give? I have no idea really, but I of course pick Washington, because I'd like to be allowed back in the city after I come back from New Year's.

Jess: I'm sure Romo will DERP this one and RGIII will come out shining.

We hope you've enjoyed our collaborative hosted final edition of the Pregame Show.

Wait, no, that's not right! We have a few treats for the upcoming playoff game threads too. Is your team already in, out, or are you waiting for the games today to find out? Q it up here for the final week of the NFL season!

I hear you on that one, it's good to stick by your team no matter what...  What do you think about Romo getting the $108 million dollar deal for 6-years with the Cowboys?

You answered your own question.  Jones named Garrett head coach because he is a "yes man" and Jones knows Garrett would never stand up or talk back to him like Jimmy Johnson did.

I don't see anything getting better until the Cowboys get a real general manager in place who isn't the owner of the team.  Unfortunately, I don't think Jones' ego will allow him to take a back seat to anybody else being in control of the personnel moves.

I think Garrett is a better coordinator then coach. The problem is I can't see him taking a demotion on the same team after being a head coach for them. He'd have to cut ties with the Cowboys in order to be just a coordinator in the NFL

The Bears better change their philosophy being as though the NFL is a pass-happy league... and I believe the Bears need to start over and rebuild their team again.  It's nothing wrong with a good defense but nowadays, to win a superbowl, a team has to have a offense who can pull the bull by the horn especially when push come to shove.  I truly believe Jay Cutler is not the QB that will take Chicago to the promise land.  I agree,  the Lions had so many injuries in the WR core, Titus Young and Nate Burleson were the best options other than Calvin Johnson on the Lions' offense WR Core.

The Washington 'Skins proved to the world this it's not about how you start, it's how you finish at the end...  The 'skins were 3-6 in the 1st 9 games or so and they won 7 straight games in a row...  Most teams with a 3-6 record would've quit...  The New York Giants' Pass Defense betrayed the NY Giants and they played a big factor into why they won't repeat as super bowl champs.

Well, bad time for a missed field goal, but it makes me happy.  BTW I really think the Seahawks have the best uniforms in the league.

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Great catch off the deflection by Austin Pettis.  Rams go up 7-3 on the Hawks

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

49ers finally had enough and take 2 plays to take the lead over the Cardinals

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

David Akers shanks a field goal.  49ers still trailing the Cardinals 6-0 in the second quarter

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Chiefs miss a short field goal.  Broncos still lead 7-3

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Hawks take advantage of good field position and put up 3 points on the Rams.  If the Hawks beat the Rams and the 49ers lose to the Cardinals, Seattle would win the NFC West and at worst the #3 seed in the NFC

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Vikings lead the Packers 13-0.  If the Vikings win, they'll clinch the #6 seed in the NFC and knock the Bears out

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Broncos and Patriots both winning their respective games.  If they both win then the Broncos are the #1 seed in the AFC, the Patriots would be #2 and the Texans would fall to #3.  That means Houston would face the #6 seed Bengals in the other AFC wild card game

12/30/12   |   Debi_L   |   11299 respect

I agree with Ash.  Better explanation here by Scott than anywhere on TV!

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Rams survive the 1st quarter unharmed against the Hawks.  Offense needs to get some 1st downs and get the defense some rest

I appreciate you explaining what the hell is happening! It helps.

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Broncos now have a chance to be the #1 seed in the AFC playoffs

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Bears win.  That eliminates the Giants and the Redskins from getting in as a wildcard.  That means if the Viking beat the Packers, they are in.  If they lose, the Bears get in as the 6 seed.  The other playoff team will be the NFC East winner, either the Cowboys or the Redskins

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

From 2-14 to 11-5 in the span of one year.  Congrats to the Colts for one of the NFL's greatest turnarounds

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Huge 3rd down play by Jay Cutler.  Bears holding onto their playoff lives

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Texans look like they are destined to host a wild card game next weekend.

12/30/12   |   Sharp Square   |   11906 respect

Texans are making it a typical thing now , they choke in big games time after time. sooner or later ya gotta call it like it is this team won't win anything with current coach.  he has no backbone and it carries over to his team.

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Texans are imploding late in the season once again

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Lions score once again.  Bears up 26-24 with 7 minutes left in the game.

12/30/12   |   RaiderSteeler15   |   19939 respect

The Lions narrow the Bears' lead to 2 points... 26-24...

Plaxico Burress with his 1st touchdown in his second stint as a Steeler

I need to exhale

12/30/12   |   RaiderSteeler15   |   19939 respect

Is it me or the Houston Texans are falling apart slowly?

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Terrible throw by Matt Schaub.  Vontae Davis with the INT in the end zone snuffs out the Texans drive.

12/30/12   |   RaiderSteeler15   |   19939 respect

Matt Schaub throws his 2nd interception of the game...

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Falcons outside linebacker John Abrahams carted off with an injury.  Mike Smith might want to consider pulling the rest of his starters

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Andrew Luck hits fellow rookie TY Hilton on 3rd and 23 for a long touchdown.  Texans #1 seed is starting to slip away

12/30/12   |   RaiderSteeler15   |   19939 respect

ANDREW LUCK IS BALLING ON THE TEXANS' DEFENSE!!  3RD AND 23 AND HE STILL GOT A TD!!

12/30/12   |   Sharp Square   |   11906 respect

no one can choke it away like Kubi-ack !   he should of been fired long ago

12/30/12   |   Debi_L   |   11299 respect

Have to admit, this Colts/Texans game is a gooder!

12/30/12   |   JenX63   |   31601 respect

 *sigh*

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

And on the ensuing kickoff, the Colts return it 102 yards for a touchdown.  Indy back out in front

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Texans take the lead over the Colts 17-16, halfway thru the 3rd quarter.  A Texans win clinches the top seed in the AFC

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

We got ourselves a ball game in the Motor City.  Lions with 2 straight scores and cut the Bears lead to 20-17.  A Bears loss knocks them out of playoff contention and keeps the Giants hopes alive

I was going to give you respect for the playoff confusion comment, but I just couldn't because, well.....GO REDSKINS!

Poor Vick...he's getting knocked down, drug around....appears in his eyes he's feeling the pain or maybe "not at home"  I really thought this game would be much closer and Vick would make one last hoorah for the Eagles (assuming the rumors are true of him & Andy Reid sticking together wherever they land)

Wooo Hooo!  Cruz salsa!  lol

All the talent on that Texans team and coach and qb cant play under anykind of pressure what so ever.

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Damn.. Matt Stafford looks absolutely awful.  Bears looking for the KO on the Lions and the Giants

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Colts take it in from 1 yard out.  Indy up 14-6 on the Texans

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Bears defense forces another Lions turnover.  Matt Forte punches it in for a touchdown and Chicago goes up 17-3 late in the second quarter.  A Bears win eliminates the defending Super Bowl champ Giants from playoff contention

12/30/12   |   Sharp Square   |   11906 respect

The team takes on the Identity of the head coach , Kubiak has made that whole team choke artist. That was about a bad a pass as Schaub can throw.

12/30/12   |   RaiderSteeler15   |   19939 respect

He's fine but Diva Samuel has re-injured that shoulder or something... ugh. As if our secondary isn't horrible enough.

Colts don't have a ton of household names but they certainly have played some inspired football.  They still lead the Texans 7-6 halfway thru the 2nd quarter.  Colts are tied in as the #5 seed but they could knock the Texans out of the top spot by beating them should the Broncos and Patriots win

12/30/12   |   Sharp Square   |   11906 respect

wow and kubi-ack calls his team into a FG again indecision

12/30/12   |   Debi_L   |   11299 respect

I'm watching with a heavy heart today. Our neighbor and friend passed away yesterday.  He was a HUGE Raiders fan, had been for years.  We had some very heated discussions about the NFL vs CFL and the Raiders and the 'Skins.  Although I know it is unlikely, I am cheering loudly for the Raiders today.  Maybe somehow he will be able to give them that little push they need to pull off the win.

Oh yeah, and GO SKINS!!!

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Ravens second stringers score a touchdown on the Bengals.  Ravens are pretty much set as the #4 seed unless they win and the Patriots lose to the Dolphins

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Even 20 yard field goals have become an adventure for the Jets

12/30/12   |   Jess   |   32912 respect

Hmm that looked like a fumble to me.

12/30/12   |   Sharp Square   |   11906 respect

I know coach is back for colts and its a great story , but the officials cant call the game in favor of Indy just to make a better story , i mean cmon.  that was a horrible call on that replay.

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Ravens have pulled their starters from the game.  If things stay the way they are the Ravens would host the Colts next weekend in one of the AFC wild card games

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Phi Dawson apparently is human.  He misses his 2nd field goal of the YEAR on a chip shot and the Steelers and Browns remained tied at 0

No one chokes under pressure as a play caller worse then Kubiak and for some reason his lack of leadership under pressure just takes over the whole texans team , ack !

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Cutler to Earl Bennett and he runs right by the Lions defense.  Bears take the lead.  A win and a Vikings loss puts Chicago into the postseason

12/30/12   |   kramer   |   11003 respect

I had to look this up...the Browns haven't swept the Steelers since 1988.  Don't let it happen today, Steelers!

I want to see the Texans and Broncos both win, which assures the Brady Bunch doesn't get a bye.

Lastly, I am praying for one more Romofail, would love to see the Skins win that division.

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Giants go up 14-0 on the Eagles.  The defending champs need a win and a loss by the Bears, Vikings and the Cowboys to sneak into the wild card

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

Bears fall behind early 3-0.  A loss ends any playoff hopes

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect

This Calvin Johnson/Charles Tillman matchup is going to be fun to watch

12/30/12   |   Scott   |   49583 respect
