Qing The Week's Best: Goodbye, Good Luck, and Thanks, Blogfather
6/27/08

Just your average week... See special note to Will Leitch below.

I'd be remiss if I didn't say a little something about Will Leitch, who is logging his final hours from his parent's basement as editor of Deadspin. Will is moving on to New York Magazine, which is presumably affords him the ability to walk upstairs and leave the house on occasion. I've never personally met Will, but like many who attempt to call blogging their "profession," he's been critical in making this happen for countless fans who didn't think they had a voice.

Back when I started my own blog, mostly just for kicks with a good friend, the idea was merely to bounce some thoughts back and forth about the sports we loved and pray that a few of our friends would read and that our family would think it was cool.

Then one day, thanks to Kyle Orton drinking Jack Daniels like it was water, I stumbled upon Deadspin.com and my internet habits changed entirely, so did my work productivity at my previous job. Daily visits turned into hourly visits and soon I realized this blogging thing could be a great deal of fun, and honestly something that shouldn't be taken too seriously. Then one day, Will linked to one of my posts and a flood (at the time, 1,000 visits in one day knocked me over) of visitors came to my measely site. For someone who doesn't consider themselves a writer by any means, just an ordinary fan who watches an extraordinary amount of sports and likes to share his thoughts with other like fans, it was pretty damn cool to think people were reading what I wrote. Or at least, people were bored at their jobs enough to click through. Anyways, I began posting twice, three, four times as often, asked Will for some advice, all of which I took to heart, and that led me into the world of FanIQ.

To make a long tribute short, I owe a great deal to Will, mostly because he's provided countless laughs, but also because he's given so many average fans a blueprint for how to make their voice heard. Thanks Will, good luck in your new role. You'll be missed in the blogosphere.

I don't know who Will Leitch is but as someone who blogs now, I know what you are talking about when you mentioned seeing your hits go up, and realizing people actually read your stuff.  I have been blogging for Cowboys Gab since the beginning of last season, and after about the first month, Matt Loede e-mails me and says that one of my blogs got picked up by ABC's blog site.  I was amazed, now I find out a lot of my articles have been picked up, primarily by other blog sites.

Sadly the one blog I kind of wished didn't get picked up, got picked up by Grizz, who is the main writer for blogging the boys.  The reason this is sad, was the article I wrote was for Giants Gab, and it was the Giants five keys to vitory over the Cowboys...even more sad was I think the Giants read it, because everything I said they did.
