Weekend Wrapup
3/17/08
I'm on Spring Break from school, and let's just say that I made sure that I have Thursday through Sunday off of work because I'm going on "vacation." I'll be so tired of basketball by the end of this weekend that...wait, what am I saying? Me tired of college basketball? Not gonna happen! It's March, baby! That means that we finally get to watch the NIT! That's not what you guys are waiting for? Well, my Buckeyes...you see, they have a number one seed in the illustrious National Invitation Tournament. They play UNC Asheville, along with the 74-foot-tall center Kenny George, in Value City Arena on Tuesday night. OK, so now you know what you are not going to watch, but what did you watch this past weekend? Here we go.
Friday
NBA: Utah upset Boston 110-92, which ended the C's winning streak at 10 games. I couldn't even win 10 in a row with the old C's on NBA Live!
Chris Paul also led the Hornets to a 108-98 upset of the Lakers, although the Lake Show didn't have Gasol. Paul did go for 27 and 17, which put him right back in the mix with Kobe and LeBron for the league's MVP award.
Back in the mix?
Detroit-84, San Antonio-80. This proves to me that while the Pistons are a good team and have a shot at beating the Celts in the East, the Spurs are also a good team, and will probably sneak up on everyone again and make it to The Finals. It's starting to be a right of June that Timmy and his boys are in the championship series.
NCAAB: North Carolina, UCLA, Memphis, Kansas, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Texas, Georgetown, Duke, and Stanford all moved on in their respective conference tournaments. Xavier, Vanderbilt, Purdue, and Indiana were all upset.
Saturday
NBA: Philadelphia-103, San Antonio-96. Bad news for the Spurs, losing both ends of a back-to-back. Good thing the regular season doesn't count in the NBA. Boston-99, Milwaukee-77.
NCAAB: No. 1 UNC held off Virginia Tech in the ACC, No. 2 UCLA held off No. 11 Stanford in the Pac-10, and Memphis, Kansas, Wisconsin, and Texas all moved on. Tennessee, Georgetown, and Duke were all upset, and Georgia won two games in the wacky SEC tournament, becoming the first 6 seed (the tourney is broken up into two divisions) to make it to the finals on Sunday. And in case you hit the hay early, Boise St held off New Mexico St in 3 OT's to win the WAC tourney. I saw this one on the ESPN crawl, and switched over to watch all three OT's and it fully whetted my appetite for March basketball. Watch the highlight below.
Boxing: Manny Pacquiao defeated Juan Manuel Marquez by decision, and it was a great night for boxing. I haven't seen this fight yet, but from all accounts, it was a great fight and this is a great rivalry for the sport.
MMA: Kala Kolohe Hose stomped Phil Baroni to win the vacated ICON middleweight title, and he now faces Robbie Lawler, who was stripped of the belt due to injury. Also, Dream.1 took place in Japan, and the main event between lightweights Shinya Aoki and Gesias Calvancante ended in a No Contest due to illegal strikes. There is no word as of now on what will happen in the Dream lightweight tournament.

Sunday
NBA: Rockets extend streak to 22 games as they handle the Lakers, 104-92. This was really the only game that mattered in the NBA on Sunday. How in the world this streak is still going, even without All-World center Yao Ming, is way beyond me. Even with Tracy McGrady locked down yesterday by Kobe Bryant, point guard Rafter Alson scored 31 points to lead this surprising team over the Los Angeles Kobe's. Detroit-105, New Orleans-84.
NCAAB: UNC beat Clemson for the ACC title to eek into the NCAA tourney, and everyone's new favorite Georgia won the SEC title. Their reward: Xavier in the first round. No. 4 Kansas won the Big XII, and No. 5 Wisconsin won the Big Ten.
The Brackets are now set, and UNC, Memphis, Kansas, and UCLA earned the number one seeds. You can find predictions all over the Internet, and if you are interested: here is mine: McKinney Bracket.
Golf: Umm..Tiger won. I almost hate calling it news, because it's really not. The real news would be if Tiger actually lost. No golfer has ever dominated like this - not Jack, not Arnie, not Player or Jones. None of them. That is why Tiger Woods is one year away from becoming the greatest golfer of all-time, Majors record be damned. A 25-footer on the 18th to win after being 7 back on Saturday? I mean, come on...it's not fair.
Of freakin' course!
NASCAR: Jeff Burton won the race at Bristol, which I didn't watch. I can't lie. March basketball is more interesting to me than March racing. The Richard Childress drivers - Burton, Kevin Harvick, and Clint Bowyer - went 1-2-3, and Joe Gibbs drivers Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin both blew shots at the end to win the whole damn thing. Stewart must have still been fuming about the tires. I can't blame him, though; the Goodyear tires on my car aren't very good either.
NHL: The Sharks' 11-game win streak was snapped by the Oilers in a shootout. I care about hockey, but not until the playoffs. When in the world do they start?
News
NFL: The Falcons have agreed to trade CB DeAngelo Hall to Oakland for a second round pick. How in the world they are getting a number 2 for this kid is beyond me. I think he'll fit right in over in Oakland with the Raiders. Just like Randy Moss did...
MLB: Two star AL East pitchers will start the season on the DL. The Red Sox Josh Beckett will skip the season opening trip to Japan and Rays ace Scott Kazmir is also out of the season opener. Looks like I'll have to update my fantasy team, as I took Kazmir in the 10th round yesterday. Hopefully he'll be back in time to give me some quality starts.
NBA: The SuperSonics franchise has reached an initial agreement on an arena with Oklahoma City. Looks like the coffee-drinking folks in Seattle have some work to do if they want to keep their team. I'm not sure if they'll be happy with just football and baseball.
Soccer: UEFA Champions League draw. Arsenal, Liverpool, Fenerbache, Chelsea, Schalke, Barcelona, Roma, Manchester United are the clubs still alive, and my money is on Chelsea followed by Barcelona.
MMA: No news on the Fedor front.
Poker: You know the drill.
