Wenger backs Ozil ahead of mega clash with Man Utd
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has shown full confidence in the club’s record signing Mesut Ozil despite his recent slump in form. The French boss claims he doesn’t want Ozil to obsess over expectations, but in fact become what is best for Arsenal.
Ozil’s form has been of concern for the Gunners as of late. The Germany international hasn’t found the back of the net since scoring against Hull City back on December 4. The attacking midfielder’s play making skills have been absent from the pitch as well.
The 25-year-old was unable to show any signs of ingenuity in the 5-1 demolition of Arsenal against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday. The former Real Madrid midfielder wasn’t able to leave his mark on the pitch or lead any threatening attacks for his side.
Pressure is slowly building up on Ozil, who was signed with a price tag of £42.5 million from Real Madrid on the transfer deadline day during last summer. Ozil has produced only two assists in his last eight appearances. Rife rumors suggest Ozil might see some bench time if he is unable to perform against Manchester United on Wednesday.
Wenger insists Ozil has all the necessary qualities to become a top class midfielder in the Premier League. Wenger also said that Ozil will have a point to prove when he steps on the field against Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium.
“Ozil feels the pressure of course, because he knows a lot is expected when you are a big transfer,” Wenger said. “There is a big expectation level, but he should not worry about that, just play in the team and enjoy it, give his best. That is the best way to deal with it.
“But on the other hand, you must say he doesn't come from a small club- he comes from Real Madrid where the pressure is always huge as well, so he is used to it.”
Wenger defended Ozil’s recent slump by suggesting that every player needed time to settle into the squad. The Emirates boss said that Arsenal must be patient with Ozil and let him settle into the team.
“He thinks it is more physical here for sure and he works on his body strength to deal with it,” Wenger added. “He needs understanding, because he always wants to do well. He is not a guy who doesn't care, his style can sometimes look like that, but he is really the opposite character.”
Wenger added that Ozil is a player who will give in his best each minute of the game, but he requires support.
