Wenger hails lack lustrous Arsenal as title contenders in Premier League
Arsene Wenger claims his side is still capable of winning the Premier League even though Arsenal is placed eighth on the table. Arsenal is currently fighting for a spot a Champions League spot having accumulated 16 points from the first 11 games of the season.
Arsenal are 11 points behind the Premier League leaders Manchester United following a 3-3 draw against Fulham on Saturday night at the Emirates. An unfortunate series of setbacks in recent weeks has left Arsene Wenger and Co. ruing over losing a number of points.
Arsene Wenger believes his side can push for the Premier League title in spite of their lack lustrous start. Well, Arsenal did record a spectacular comeback last season, but back then they still had the services of Robin van Persie.
Robin van Persie, who is now playing for Manchester United, went on a record breaking goal scoring spree last season to help Arsenal acquire a Champions League spot.
Arsenal’s defense was rated as the best defense in the Premier League a few games ago. Now, Arsenal has conceded 14 goals and grabbed a single victory in the past four games. Arsene Wenger believes Arsenal is poised for a strong return in the second half of the season. Arsene Wenger also believes that Arsenal can still with the Premier League title.
“Of course, yes why not,” a bemused Arsene Wenger responded to the title question. “We had come through three difficult games, especially the first two. We had to recover from the United game and then we gave it all in Germany [Schalke 04].”
“All of us were disappointed not to beat Fulham because we had the chances to do that and in the end we were frustrated, but there were many positives to take from the game. Our performances are not as big a disaster as some people like to portray them and I still have great belief in this team.”
Oliver Giroud’s impressive form against Fulham was the highlight of the day for Arsenal. The French striker is finally getting a grip of the life in Premier League. Oliver Giroud scored a brace for Arsenal against Fulham.
“I feel better and better,” Oliver Giroud said in an interview on Arsenal’s official website. “I'm confident about my qualities and I never give up. When I didn't score at the beginning of the season, I stayed confident and always worked on my mind and my game. I think there is a lot of quality in this team and we will have better days in front of us.”
