Remember how David Beckham was going to come to America and make soccer a major sport? Yeah, that hasn't exactly happened. And despite Beckham's absurd $250 million contract, it now seems pretty apparent that Beckham wants out.Right now there are a lot of rumblings coming out that Beckham and his alien wife want desperately to return to England. Not what you want to hear at the start of Beckham's second season - after he spent most of the first season injured, to boot.
The Galaxy is currently preparing for the coming MLS season. The team just finished a swing through Korea and China to play three exhibitions, and there has to be some alarm at the level of disinterest in the team and Beckham. The final game of the tour, played in Hong Kong, drew a reported 11,000 fans — small even by pre-Beckham MLS standards.
In other words, the novelty is starting to wear off, even over in Asia, where Beckham is considered a near deity. Just so you know, I'm not making that up. There's a Buddhist temple in Thailand that has a statue of Beckham built into its altar.
In addition to all of this, Beckham also apparently doesn't have many friends in LA, which is usually what happens once you start hanging out with mega-weirdo Tom Cruise.
Beckham's also in trouble because of his contract. To get out of it, he'd have to find a real soccer team that will buy him out, and it’s possible that a 32-year-old player who’s starting to break down isn’t worth that much money on the open market. So in other words, he may have to stay with the Galaxy and become an often-injured player who doesn't draw fans.
Frankly, I never expected Beckham to make soccer big here in the United States. It's just not going to happen here. Unfortunately for the MLS, they decided to hitch their entire existence to one man, which is never a good idea.
Regardless of how this ends, and it won't end well, I'm not going to be real sympathetic to any of the parties involved. And I'm not going to be going to any soccer games any time soon, either.
