What Does the NFL Preseason Really Mean?
READ MORE:
NFL
For many fans preseason is nothing more than a teaser trailer heading into the actual season.  A chance for a brief moment to see your favorite players in a meaningless game for the first time since the close of last season. To veterans it means one more way to get injured prior to kick off in a meaningful game.  However, to  late round draft picks, free agent acquisitions, and rookie free agents it means much much more.

How they do in the playoffs could mean the difference between Nicole Richie's stay in rehab for anorexia to Lindsay Lohan's stay at a nightclub.  Either they will make the team, or their stay in the NFL could be over at the same time the preseason ends.  They aren't out there to be awe struck at being on national television, they are out there to make big plays.  The defensive rookies are out to hit hard, to strip the ball, or to make the interception.  Don't bother telling them it's a meaningless game, it's not.  And nothing is going to impress the coach more than pulling off a big play that could seal the game.

Winning and losing may not matter much in the big picture when you look at the fact that the Colts have lost 7 of the last 8 preseason games played.  However to the teams like Detroit Lions, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers it could go a little bit toward a moral boost.  It's their chance to show people that they have fixed their problems from the previous season, to come out early and show they aren't going to make the same mistakes, and most importantly their chance to rally the support of their fans prior to the beginning of the season.  As former Dallas Defensive Coach Dave Wannstedt once snapped at a reporter who asked him if the preseason game was important, ""Are they keeping score? Are they turning on the lights? Then it must count for something!"

The games may not go into any form of statistics and no records will be made or broken, at least none we would care to record, these games do mean something to someone.  As for me, it's another chance for me to watch my favorite game again, after a long and grueling off season of football withdraws.  It may mean nothing, but it'll give me my fix....at least till September when the meaningful games start.

Great read, thanks for writing this Nate; and reminding us that Preseason may not be all that exciting to the fans throughout entire games, it really isn't as meaningless as it seems. I love preseason - I like to watch the rookies and other non-starters and see what we've got for depth.

Not bad...but the preseason STILL MUST BE SHORTENED TO 2 GAMES!!!

Lions, Steelers, Bucs ... hmm, which one is not like the other? Curious use of the Steelers in there ;)

I enjoy the preseason and watching the rookies ... but I also wish it was shortened by at least 1 game.

That was a pretty disparate group: One rising from the depths, one looking to bounce back and one that just plain sucks

Steeler fans may get mad at me, but it's a significant fall from Super Bowl team to 8-8 team that misses the playoffs.  Remember how they made it to the Super Bowl the year before?  There are a lot of people calling that a fluke.  They are out to show they are healed and back to Super Bowl Caliber, and that the year before wasn't a fluke.

How could it be a fluke? They were pretty solid the year before. It's not like they've been a disaster of late.

2001: 13-3
2002: 10-5-1 Won AFC North
2004: 15-1 (lost in the AFC championship
2005: Super Bowl Champs

In my opinion, LAST YEAR was the fluke.

Not saying that they were bad the seasons prior to their Super Bowl, were they not the first team in NFL history to be a wild card team that would go on to win a Super Bowl?  Also, how many people thought that the Seahawks were robbed that Super Bowl?  There are plenty of people that would venture to say that their Super Bowl victory was a fluke, and while I agree a lot of the problems last season was because of injury, don't tell that to the Big Ben nay sayers.

While they were a Wild Card team you might remember they suffered some injuries mid season and lost a couple games. WC means very little as far as I'm concerned.

I think what you're trying to say as a "fluke" is that they weren't the most flashy team to win the super bowl and thus didn't come across to those "plenty" as really good. Fact remains they won the Super Bowl and had a solid team. I'm not even going to comment on the officiating.

Was that super bowl team worse than last year's Colts? Most likely. They weren't the best team ever to win the super bowl, but a fluke isn't the right description.

You may be right, but 8-8 after a Super Bowl season and dropping 6 of the first 8 games played last season makes me believe they do have something to prove.

Well, I think we all know why they struggled last year. All 32 teams have something to prove, so I do agree with you there.

Oh yeah, another reason for them to want to prove something early on, they have a new Coach trying to fill some really big shoes.

I don't want to sound like a "whiner", as my Seahawks and their fans have been so lovingly dubbed as of late...but I have to say that the Steelers that year were definitely not the best team in the AFC. I wouldn't even say they were the number two team in the conference that year. I remember rooting for them at times because I had Roethlisberger as a backup QB on my fantasy team, so I watched a few of their games; and a lot of their wins were because some other really good teams...better teams...shot themselves in the foot. And I know, "a good team finds a way to win" but I think a lot of those teams that they beat to get to where they did just HAPPENED to have their bad games while the Steelers were still playing mediocre with a lot of highly talented players.

That's not to say that they won't come out and kick some butt this season though, they sure looked good in the first few minutes of the HOF game. Better than they did "that year".

I think its weird how that Steeler team gets called out so much.  Personally I think it was bad luck and injuries that kept them having a better record two years ago.  I mean just look down that roster... there's no way that team should miss the playoffs.  But thats my opinion.  Personally I think they'll go about 9-7 or 10-6 this year and maybe make a run in the playoffs.

Well they did have a bad season last year, and I didn't call them out because I dislike them.  There are people who think it was more than bad luck last year, and oh yeah, Mike Tomlin is now the head coach.  There are quite a few teams I could have mentioned right there including the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals, but the Steelers stood out more than them.  They had a combination of injuries last year and a loss of several good veteran players.  There is plenty of reason to wonder if they might have a few down years coming.  The introduction of a new coaching staff only adds to that.  They did play that first preseason game (The HOF Game) like they had something to prove.

Preseason is all about getting the tailgating routine down.  Getting the sound system working properly and the the grill cleaned up and the cornhole games broke in.
