College Football's winningest program has been embarrassed in its first two games, lost 4 straight for the first time in 40 years, and the fan base is calling for the head coach's head. Recruits committed to Michigan now want to head to Oregon. Chad Henne, on pace to break ALL Michigan passing records was cheered when injured last in the first half. It's gotten ugly in Ann Arbor and this is just a cliff notes version of the gloom. So, what's wrong with Michigan football?
Is it all Lloyd Carr's fault as many would indicate? As the head coach he definitely has to take the brunt of criticism. Michigan has looked unprepared and unmotivated, job 1a and 1b for a football coach.
Is it Ron English and his defense? Goes to show you that a coach is only as good as his players. English was a hot head coaching candidate this offseason with Alan Branch and LaMarr Woodley leading the way. Certainly Ron factors into the train wreck.
What about recruiting? This is a joke if you believe this is the issue.
Chad Henne? I expressed some concern over the fact that the 4-year starter wasn't named captain before the season started and cautioned you to consider the possible lack of leadership. Can we agree that's a major concern? Henne is a good quarterback. Not great. He has disappointed in the first two games, but it's not all on him.
Leadership? Mike Hart guaranteed a victory this Saturday against Notre Dame. I love his passion, but I'm not fully on board with this style of leadership. Where are fellow captains Shawn Crable and Jake Long? We don't know what goes on in the locker room, but I suspect there's a void in this department.
All these factors above have aided to the fan meltdown in Ann Arbor, but do you know who's really to blame? Those in the MSM creating the lofty expectations every year because of the winged helmet. Michigan has never had success when they rely on their offense. We should have expected some struggles. Obviously, no one in their right mind could have predicted a loss to Appalachian State, but a loss to Oregon was feasible. This was not a national title contender. Expectations were way out of whack and whenever that happens you're bound for disaster. Lesson learned.
