It seemed not too long ago that the heavyweight division ruled boxing. Lightweights, welterweights, and middleweights were merely under cards for the division people really came to see. Ali, Frazier, Holyfield, Forman, Tyson, and many others wowed us with incredible fights of heart and sheer punching power. Nowadays, the heavyweight division seems to lack all of the above and then some. It all starts with Wladimir Klitschko.
If anyone watched the Wladimir Klitschko v.s. Sultan Ibragimov fight knows what I mean. It was a twelve round jab fest by Klitschko that ultimately landed a decision. Clearly Klitschko could have knocked out Ibragimov but he chose not too. Ibragimov was slow and off balance from the beginning of the fight. Wladimir had him on the ropes many times and just did not finish. Emmanuel Steward didn't have the best things to say to Wladimir between rounds. Emmanuel even told Wladimir he was disappointing the crowd. Wladimir did the bare minimal he could do to win. Is this Wladimir's fault that his competition is very amateur? No, but it is his fault for not putting up a good fight. If he thinks jabbing a lesser opponent for 12 rounds is going to win the fans over, he's dead wrong.
All we can hope for is some new blood. What happened to all the heavyweights from the Olympics? Where are these up and coming fighters that will make the heavyweight division interesting again? Only time will tell. Maybe Mike Tyson will come out of retirement.....
