Another exciting Saturday is once again in the books.  This time Alabama was thought to be the safest team in the Top...hell 25, as they sat Idle and watched the #'s 1,3 and 4 teams all lose.  What they did not expect was to get leap frogged by # 5 Texas.  With almost a 200 point advantage in front of Texas in the AP Poll last week, Alabama, after watching # 1 Oklahoma fall, was primed and ready to accept the top spot in college football.  In a "what have you done for me lately" NCAA, that was not the case.
         
Texas, with their win over Oklahoma took over the # 1 spot in the polls, becoming the fourth team this year with the honor (or curse as it's turning out).  If they plan on keeping it, along with their National Championship aspirations, they are going to have a lot of work to do.  Texas must run the gauntlet in four of their next five games as they face off against Missouri, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech back to back to back.  Then, after playing Baylor at home, they must travel to Kansas to take on the Jayhawks.  If they can run the table, they will be the best team by far in the nation.
         
On the flip side, Alabama has a lot of upset games coming their way.  With the exception of LSU in about a month, Alabama plays a good Ole Miss team who we know can win on the road, then an unpredictable game against Tennessee in Knoxville.  Anything can happen in that game, and a lot of people are expecting the upset to take place against Tennessee due to the fact that it's a rivalry game and it's in Knoxville.  Alabama is 3-0 however in games away from Tuscaloosa, and should be ready to take on the challenge.  After LSU, Alabama looks to end the six game losing streak against a floundering Auburn this year.  On paper, if they can get by LSU and win the SEC Championship, Alabama should be a shoe in for the National Championship game.
         
So who should be number 1?  Texas has just one win versus a quality opponent in Oklahoma.  Alabama has two in # 9 Clemson and # 3 Georgia.  Texas beat Arkansas 52-10 in Austin the week after Alabama beat Arkansas 49-14 in Fayetteville.  While Texas averages more points per game offensively than Alabama, they gave up almost 400 yards in the air and five touchdowns against former # 1 Oklahoma, leading people to believe Alabama is the better team defensively.  The Tide however played down to their opponents' level in two of their six wins.  All in all, in the words of Coach Nick Saban, do you remember who was number 1 at this point in the season last year?  It does not matter, just like it does not matter now.  If either of these teams want to play for a National Championship in January, they had better take care of business.  If they don't, they will be the next to fall.
