Who Will Follow Ty Willingham As Washington Huskies Next Football Coach?
Expect The Huskies To Make A Big Splash
The stock market may be depressing, but with all the enthusiasm as Jim Cramer, I urge you to buy stock in Washington Huskies football. They are going to make a "big splash" with this next coaching hire and in four years compete with the top of the Pac-10.

University of Washington president Mark Emmert loves himself some football. He understands what a consistent, winning program can do for a school as a whole. If you think you've heard his name before, he was basically the guy at LSU that fired Gerry DiNardo and lured Nick Saban away from Michigan State. I heard that turned out well.

Now Emmert has his buddy Steve Woodward as Athletic Director and the two will be sure to make the right hire. They've been planning this move for some time.

Washington Football has a chance to become the most popular sports team in Seattle. At one time it was, back when Don James ran a successful (albeit potentially illegal) program in the 80's and early 90's, culminating in a 1991 National Championship.

The venue is beautiful, the administration is committed to football. Aside from not exactly having a fertile recruiting base, any coach would love to move to Seattle.

So who might UW be looking at to make a big splash?

Lane Kiffin I expect the Huskies to go with a younger coach, one who can provide a bored fanbase new enthusiasm about the future and hopefully convince the wealthier alumni that a new practice facility is a solid investment.  Kiffin could do this. He's recruited the West Coast while at USC and clearly has the perfect model in Pete Carroll to follow. Kiffin also has the necessary chip on his shoulder that will be needed to climb out of the deep hole the football program is currently in.

Steve Sarkisian Another USC guy, one who has actual coordinator experience would make a great hire. He might not have the big name appeal of Kiffin, but also doesn't have the black eye. There's no doubt Sarkisian knows offense, but can he be creative enough to get points on the board without all the blue-chip talent? I don't doubt Sarkisian could convince a few high school all-americans to buy into his program.

Jim Mora Jr.  We know he'd want the job, but he's already tabbed as the successor to Mike Holmgren. That's big NFL money to compete with, but don't be surprised if Emmert is willing to throw that down. Mora Jr. may also feel a commitment to his alma mater and there's no doubt his enthusiasm and vigor are perfect. I'd tab him as the early front runner.

Gary Pinkel Missouri's head coach is being thrown out there as a name, thanks to his assistant coaching tenure during the Don James era. While he has strong ties to UW and likes the area, I don't see why he'd leave what he has at Missouri. Unless he feels that this run can't continue after Chase Daniel leaves.

The Usuals: Pat Hill, Chris Peterson and Gary Patterson. Intriguing, but too risky in my opinion.

Surprise? How about Mike Leach from Texas Tech. You want excitement brought back to Washington football, how does 400+ passing yards and 40+ points a game sound? I think he'd be willing to leave Lubbock for this kind of opportunity and the money Emmert would throw at him. Still a longshot.

I think it's Mora's job if he wants it, otherwise Kiffin would be a tremendous fit and investment. Who do you think will end up in Seattle?

I'm dissapointed, Jason.  No stabs at Saban being available?  I would have done it.

I was thinking Mora too.  But a person close to the situation that is considered a very good Seahawks informant (ok, Jess) said he is definitely suiting up for the Seahawks job.  It would be tough not to go after Tiffin.  You know he's ready to prove himself to someone.
Yea I don't know anything about the other possibilities but I would definitely be surprised to see Mora take the job. He's already been named Holmgren's successor and will have four years left on his contract with Seattle at the end of this year.

One thing that getting a coaching job with the Seahawks did was provide Mora with a way back to Seattle, where he wanted to be. Now that he's here, I think chances are less likely that he'd take a job with the Huskies than they would have been if he were still down south. Not impossible...but improbable.

I could be wrong...hey...it's been known to happen (more often than not).

I actually wouldn't mind seeing Leach go there. I think it'd be awesome to see that kind of system in the Pac-10.

UW will drop a boat load of cash on who ever they bring in. The Huskies have not been relevant in the PAC10 since Slick Rick the Ruler was prowling the sidelines. My money is on either Mora or Kiffin.

I'm asking this question in earnest, because I don't know enough about Leach to have an opinion and I'm too lazy to look it up.  But is Leach really that good, or is he just benefitting from having Harrell and Crabtree?  Has he had success with a team that didn't have those two players on it?  (That's an honest question.  I have no idea.)

Leach has had success at multiple stops... He was the offensive coordinator at Kentucky in the early to mid-nineties when they were a scoring machine... Then, he went to OU for one year (the first year Stoops took over)... Stoops said he hired him because he couldn't stop him while he was defensive coordinator at Florida...  Now, Leach has been in Lubbock for nine years and has built that program up from the scrap heap... Most people talk about his quarterbacks and receivers throughout the years being system quarterbacks... so, to me that speaks very well to Leach being the one responsible, not Harrell or Crabtree...

I remember when Kentucky did some damage with Tim Couch at QB, other than that, I don't recall them ever being an offensive juggernaut.  Mainly because of Hal Mumme though (why they stunk, not because of the success).

I don't have anything to backup my opinion or argue with anyone about Leach.  I'm just not sold on him being a great fit for a head coaching job in a program that needs rebuilding.

Texas Tech has a good shot to win a National Championship this year at a school that was nothing before Mike Leach came there.  They have been a consistent top 15 team over the years with Leach at the helm, and he has developed a number of teams that have all been huge offensive machines.  This year they added defense and better players, and he is dominating.

There is probably no better or more innovative coach in college football than Leach.  if you want to win consistently, hire him.  If you want a traditional program, hire Kiffin.  And watch another 4 years of terrible teams and mediocre play, managed by a meglomaniac.

As a Cal fan, I can only hope the Huskies hire Kiffin.

Leach was the offensive coordinator those years Couch did that damage... Here's some stats... the previous nine years before Leach, Tech had 58 wins and one bowl win... this is Leach's ninth year and already has 73 wins and five bowls wins...

He may not be the one to rebuild a team, but he was the one that got those two guys you were asking about originally... I think a lot of offensive guys on the west coast would be very interested in playing in that offense

Because Tiffin struggled with an NFL team?  Nick Saban disagrees.

Point taken.  You win.

Not that it will happen because the situation is just too perfect in Boulder, but Dan Hawkins would be a good coach to chose when rebuilding a program.  He built the Boise St team that beat Oklahoma and the team he's putting together at Colorado is a couple of years away from being nationally relevant.

Another canidate should be Chip Kelly, the offensive coordinator at Oregon.  In one year he turned Dennis Dixon from an average starting QB into a Heisman contender.

I think that Lane Kiffin will get the job however.  Leach has established himself at Tech, why would he leave that to coach a team that's at the bottom of the Pac-10.  Plus it's hard to look at the Oakland Raiders and call it a "black eye" for Kiffen.

Would it surprise any of you to hear that a lot of Bulldog fans would be happy to see Pat Hill leave the Valley to take the job in Seattle?

First i am a die hard Husky fan who is waiting for the next Don James to come to Seattle.  My candidate might be the current coach at Boise State who has proven he is a quality game coach even though he still has some of hawkins players left.  His keyto me would be to surround himself with experienced, quality assistants who the recruiting game.
