Who Would Have Guessed: Yankee Joba Chamberlain ESPN's Who's Next?
READ MORE:
I know this will surprise you, that's why I'm saving you potential injury when ESPN the Mag arrives at your door. (btw, I haven't paid for The Mag in years and yet it still follows me around. Thank you to whoever.) New York Yankees reliever Joba Chamberlain has been "voted" by fans and ESPN as Who's Next? He must have barely edged out Red Sox Jacoby Ellsbury as baseball's representative.

Listening to the commentary of Chamberlain this fall I was beginning to suspect he'd end up a big disappointment because of the increasingly unreachable expectations. Now it's almost certain -- Joba, you have no chance.

Other finalists who will be in the magazine's Who's Next? issue are West Virginia running back Noel Devine, track star Tyson Gay, Trailblazer's Brandon Roy and 49ers Patrick Willis. Those all seem solid choices.

Devine should end up as an electric back for the Mountaineers the next few seasons but this might be too high of praise. What about Knowshon Moreno or DeMarco Murray? After last week, LeSean McCoy deserves some more pub than Devine. Willis will win several defensive MVP awards and Tyson Gay should rack up numerous gold medals next summer, while Brandon Roy is everything you'd want in a young NBA star.

But Joba Chamberlain? I guess I'm just not seeing where he fits into this equation other than being a New York Yankee and good pitching prospect.

Outside of these names -- who do you think "is next?"

Ironic Who's Next is out same day as SI Sportsmen of the year. Speaking of which Peter King took over his first back-cover column since Rick Reilly left for ESPN.

Because I'm a homer, I'll go with these guys

  • Yovanni Gallardo
  • Andrew Bynum, but you all knew that already
  • Not Justin Harrell or Brandon Jackson (hurrary for wasting good picks!)
  • Travon Hughes... by his senior year everyone will know him
