Who will win the National Championship? A guide on arguing for your College team:
9/17/08

Examples of fan bases well versed on the above chart:
Duke - We'd kick your butt on the hardwood, come see us in February
Notre Dame - So what if we're 3-8... we have more Heisman Trophy winners than you before 1930, & more made up Nat'l Championships than anyone (Alabama is a close 2nd)
Stanford - Intellectually speaking, we'd wipe the library floor with you; what did you score on your SAT's?
Tennessee - If you played in the SEC, you'd lose to UCLA too...wait, I mean you'd lose a few games here or there
Oklahoma - The BCS sucks, we don't even really care until there is a playoff, then we'll show you
Ohio State - You are all just jealous, cuz you wish you were us.

As you can see by the above chart, unfortunately we don't get to settle it on the field every year & as College Football fans we are often left wondering who really is the best team in the country.  I want to give out a few ideas to whomever may be paying attention (who the hell is making the decisions on this stuff anyways -- I want to see a face & a name!) on how we can improve what is already the greatest sport on the entire planet.

Playoff or no playoff, that is the question.
This is the age old argument about College Football...why is there no playoff?  Virtually every other sport you can think of has a playoff system in place to decide the best team.  This has been the hottest topic of late on the College Football scene & it continually gets shot down year after year or "pushed back".  I say let's give it a try & if it royally F's things up like some people say then we can always change back to what we have now -- that's a novel concept don't ya think.

Arguments against the playoff:
  1)  College Football is unique because of the bowls  --  This is a fallacy!  College Football is unique because it's college football.  Besides, you can still incorporate the bowls (& more importantly the money)
2)  A playoff would diminish the regular season & render it useless -- Oh really, cuz having to play your butts off week in & week out to make the Top 8, would be so easy.  If anything, it would make the regular season that much better,  Look at College Basketball, or NFL, these leagues' regular seasons are still extremely important, sure a loss isn't as devastating as it is in College football but that's just the nature of the sport.  Let's face it, everyone understands that a playoff would bring even more interest & excitement.
3)  Still teams would complain about getting left out  -- Really?  Do you hear much complaining from the 66th team in the NCAA Tourney?  Besides, if you were the 9th or 10th best team in College Football there's a good chance you weren't good enough to win it all....where as the 3rd or 4th team has every bit a right to be involved in the discussion.
4)  It would take too much time & would hinder the players academics  -- This is the biggest joke of all.  The players already have a month between the end of the season & the Bowl game.  We could easily fit the playoff system into that time frame.  If need be, cut a game or two from the regular season (there are worthless games on every team's schedule anyways).  Nobody complains about how much time the NCAA/NIT tourneys cut into academics.  The Playoff would take place in between semesters for the most part anyways.

Preseason rankings, what are they good for?
Preseason/Early Season rankings are good for only one thing....hype!  Selling magazines & newspapers & having the online public check your site is what these polls are about.  In reality, it's actually unfair & a detrement to the sport.  Is it safe to assume that Southern Cal is a better team than East Carolina? Probably.  Is it fair? No!  There shouldn't be a poll released or published until mid-October at the earliest, but in all fainess I completely understand why they are there -- the banter, the discussion, the rivalries, to spark interest, hate, rudeness, utter disbelief...all the things that make College Football so great.  But should a team that starts 29th be penalized for finishing behind a team that starts 3rd if they win all their games?  Absolutely not.  I say get rid of the polls until they actually mean something, & then vote from scratch & vote for the BEST TEAM!

My conference is better than your conference!
Anyone else tired of this argument?  SEC fans probably aren't, because they have the best conference most years.  Duh!  It's no big secret, so why the front page news?  Just because the SEC is tougher overall doesn't mean that Georgia is better than Missouri, or Southern Cal, or Ohio State.  The strength of the conference has little to no bearing on who the best teams are.  Will it be incredibly impressive if Georgia were to run the table in the stout SEC?  Of course.  Does that mean that they are better than SC who runs through a weak Pac 10?  No, it means nothing.  It's no teams fault what conference they are in, you just play the games on the schedule!

My solution:  Since I've been a little boy watching the sport that I love most, I've always questioned why there is a need for conferences in College Football.  Before you jump on me about that statement, I understand all the logistics & reasons for the conferences.  What I don't understand in today's society, is how we couldn't make it work without the allegiances.  Wouldn't it be great if there was random scheduling where anyone could play anyone on a given week & you didn't have to play the same schools year, after year, after year, after year........ & on until forever?  I say get rid of the conferences, yes there will be major complications involved, & yes it would be awkward for a time, but I think it would serve the sport for the better overall.  It would be better for players, coaches & fans as well.

Final Verdict:
Notre Dame fans (see above chart) -- you may have to go back as far as needed (in your case, about 73 years) to find some statistics backing up your rant that your team/program is the best!  Until there is a playoff system in place, we won't truly know year in & year out who is the best.  Yes, the current system gives us the closest glimpse of the "real" National Champion, at least under the current circumstances.... but do we really want the Computers telling us who the best, most deserving teams are to play for it all?

I don't, but after seeing some of CF's pollsters & how he abuses them.... I may change my mind.

I say play it out on the field, an 8 team playoff should suffice,

Most, if not all, of this stuff will probably never happen but a guy can hope can't he?  These are just a few of the rants ideas that I have to improve upon what is already THE GREATEST SPORT ON EARTH!  Thanks College Football for making my life better....one wednesday, thursday, friday Saturday at a time!
