Why I think Rex Grossman is the best QB in the NFC North...right now.

This is what I said in response to a poll question on who was the best QB in the NFC North:

This is going to seem biased and insane to a lot of you...but I voted (and actually believe this, and plan on stating this on my podcast when we do our NFL season preview) for Grossman.

Here's my logic. First off for those of you voting for Rodgers based off of his relief appearance in one game against the Cowboys...you're absolutely insane. How many backup QB's have come in and looked great for one or two games but when they are forced to play an entire season (and coaches can gameplan for them) end up being terrible? The most obvious example here is A.J. Feeley during his first sting with Philadelphia and how great he looked...and then we saw him in reality when he was a Dolphin. Even as a Bear fan I can say this, Rodgers SHOULD do well ideally, he's got a good supporting cast. However, there's no guarantee that he doesn't go out and get abused in a game and never recover mentally. So I'm not voting for someone on potential. This poll is who is the Best QB RIGHT NOW, now who COULD be the best.

Next, I think voting for Tavaris Jackson is even worse. Anybody who has the running game he has should do well without even trying (see Rivers, Philip). The guy is obviously athletic, and yes has potential. But he still makes terrible decisions. Granted, his wide receiver core was not very good, but after watching him in two full Bear games and a few others, it was not all their fault. And for those of you who think Bernard Berrian is going to make a huge difference for him...you obviously have not watched the guy actually PLAY. Berrian butchered so many routes for Grossman it wasn't even funny. He cut so many routes off, which lead to Grossman turnovers (the one that sticks out was in the Charger game...if you can find Bears vs. Charger highlights look for Grossman's first half interception and you'll see what I mean...Berrian just stopped out of nowhere). Plus his hands are incredibly erratic, he'll make a few highlight reel catches...but he'll drop a number of easy passes. The guy can do one thing well: run deep routes. That's it. He's NOT a number one WR, and Vikings fans will find that out this year.

My explanation for Kitna is going to be short and sweet. The guy can throw for a lot of garbage time yardage...but he's not going to do anything special. Why does he keep getting replaced? (Seattle, Cincinnati, they've tried in Detroit and probably will try again) He doesn't do anything to WIN games. Yes they started 6-2 last year, but it was an obvious fluke (Strahan called them "the worst 6-3 (or whatever their record was at the time) I've ever seen"), and their 1-7 second half record proved that. No chance in hell am I voting for Kitna.

Which brings me to the guy I voted for, Grossman. He's done something none of these other QB's have done (yet) and that's win PLAYOFF games and get to a SUPER BOWL. Yes the guy went through turnover madness at times that year, but he still made a number of plays that won games in PLAYOFF games...not some regular season garbage time madness. Plus the guy was COMPLETELY different after getting benched last year. His decision making was dramatically improved...and it showed on the field. His numbers in 3 and a half games (before he got hurt in the Redskin game): 75-136 for 911 yards, 3 TD's and 1 INT. The guy threw for nearly 300 (296) yards against the eventual SUPER BOWL CHAMPION Giants...and should've had 85 and a TD more (Hester dropped a bomb where he was completely behind the defense). Yes the guy still lost 3 fumbles in those games, but a large part of that was due to the offensive line, and the lack of blitz protection from the RB's (i.e. Cedric Benson). Point is, the guy made plays with the worst running game in the league against good defenses. (SEA, NYG, DEN to a lesser extent)

I know i'm going to be deemed insane by a lot of people that only watch ESPN and think they know what they're talking about, but remember, this is best in the NFC NORTH RIGHT NOW. I don't think Grossman's even a top 15-20 QB in the league, but i think Grossman is the best QB in the North right now. There's a good chance Rodgers will end up doing better...but that's all there is, a chance. Until Rodgers (or Jackson) win an actual playoff game and go through everything Grossman's been through, i'm voting for Grossman.
